You were watching from the sidewalk as an orange glow began to illuminate the nursery. You checked your watch. Just another thirty seconds.

Right on time, a small boy ran from the house, struggling to hold the large baby in his arms. The boy, Dean, stopped and stood in the middle of the lawn, looking at his home.
That was your cue. You approached him, and he spun around, taking in your vessel. You had ended up in young female, about 26 years of age, wearing a black tank top and denim shorts.

"I'm here to help you, Dean Winchester." You said, kneeling next to him. "Would you like me to hold Sam for you? I promise I will not harm him."

Dean raised his eyebrows, suspicious even at this young age. That was good; it would help him in the future.

Still eyeing you curiously, Dean nodded, and passed Samuel to you. You took the swaddled bundle in your arms, grinning at his weight. He would certainly be strong. The baby's large hazel eyes peered up at you, watching your smiling expression.

You had only a few minutes left. Turning to Dean, your expression became serious. "Dean, everything is going to change now. I'm very sorry, but from here on your life will be full of hardship. You must always, above anything else, protect Sam. I will be there to help you, but for the majority you will be on your own. But through all this, Dean, you must remember to care for yourself as well. Okay?"

Four year-old Dean cocked his head in utter confusion.

You sighed. "Protect Sam," You told him, reluctantly handing back the baby. "And yourself. Got it?"

This time, Dean nodded. Smiling, you vanished.

Seven month-old Sam wriggled on the motel bed, crying and screaming while Dean sorted through containers of powered formula. Unable to read the labels, Dean threw one of the bottles in frustration. Falling to the floor, he began to cry.

Promptly, you appeared, standing over the bed and looking at Sam wail.

Dean's head snapped up. "You're back!" He shouted in disbelief.

You turned to look at him. "I will always come back, Dean. Now, how do we make Samuel stop his hysterics?" You inquired, observing the scattered formula tins.

Dean sniffed, wiping his eyes. "Daddy feeds him the powder stuff with water, but I don't know how."

"It's okay, Dean." You consoled, picking up one of the containers. "This is why I'm here."

Getting a clean bottle, you showed Dean how to take a few spoonfuls of powder and mix it with warm water. Arranging Sam on a pillow and placing him in Dean's lap, Dean got Sam to take the bottle, sucking the warm milk down happily. You grinned.

Dean glanced up at you, catching your smile. "What's your name?"

"(y/n)."

Kissing both Dean and Sam's foreheads, you vanished yet again.

Dean saw you throughout the years, but you wouldn't appear when Sam was there. You told Dean you were Sam's guardian angel, and that he shouldn't know about you. The only reason you let Dean see you was because you had to work together, you said, to protect Sam.

Dean hadn't seen you for almost a year when you showed up in their motel room on Christmas. You were sitting on the edge of Sam's bed while he was asleep, stroking his hair. Dried tears lingered on his face from when Dean told him the truth about their father's work.

Dean stood in the doorway, shocked to see you sitting next to Sam.
"(y/n)..." He choked.

You glanced up at Dean, to see him dragging a miniscule tree in the door. "Dean. Where did you get that?"

The twelve year-old swallowed. "Uhhh..."

Getting off the bed without jostling Sam, you took one of the stolen presents from Dean's arms. "You shouldn't give this to Sam," You told him, scanning the package. "That is, unless he likes Barbie."

"Crap." Dean muttered.

You smirked. "Here," You said, handing Dean a small packet wrapped in silver paper. "Give him this. It's as much for him as it is for me."

Since that night, Sam never took off the braided leather bracelet with the strange metal bead that his brother had given him for Christmas.

You rarely appeared throughout Sam's teenage years, except for when Dean called you, or when the bracelet alerted you. The bead woven into it was a sort of angelic homing device.
When Sam left for Stanford, you left Dean as well.

Since your vessel was about the right age for a student, you were able to blend in easily and stay close to Sam while he was in college.

When Sam returned to hunting, you lingered in the shadows. You wouldn't be surprised if Dean had forgotten you.

At least, that's what you thought had happened, until he called you again.

They were in another dingy motel room. Sam was taking a shower when Dean sat down, clasped his hands together, and prayed.

You came almost instantly, snapping from a scenic river to the dark motel room. "Dean."

His head flew up, eyes raking over you. "(y/n)..."

"What is it, Dean? You haven't prayed to me in years."

Dean sighed, running a hand through his hair. "It's Sam. He's been having weird dreams, and-"

Before Dean could continue though, the bathroom door swung open and Sam walked out, rubbing his hair with a towel. He quickly spotted you, standing in front of Dean, in a tank top and shorts, when there was snow outside.

Shooting Dean a look, Sam grimaced. "Dean," He half-whispered through gritted teeth. "How on earth did you pick up a girl while I was in the shower?"

Dean's eyes widened. "No, Sammy, it's not like that. This is (y/n), she's-"

Immediately, you slapped your palm over Dean's mouth, as you had seen humans do on TV.
Dean shoved your arm away though, and finished his statement.

"(y/n)'s your guardian angel!"

Sam scoffed. "Thanks Dean, but I'm really not into hookers."

"No, you idiot!" Dean shouted. "She's an actual, full-blown angel! She's been helping me take care of you since you were a baby! Dammit, she was the one who taught me how to make your frickin' formula! And now I called her back because of your dreams!"

"Dean, I feel that from your explanation, Samuel might-"

"You're an angel?" Sam questioned, interrupting you.

Hesitantly, you nodded. "Dean speaks the truth. I am your guardian angel, Samuel. I was assigned to you upon your birth, to protect you."

Sam's mouth hardened into a thin line, although you did not know why. "Does that entitle you to protect my loved ones, too?"

"Yes, to an extent..."

"Then why is Jess dead?" Sam demanded, eyes blazing.

Unaffected by his emotion, you shook your head. "I am to protect you from unnecessary harm, not keep you from your fate."
