I Heard Glass Shatter

Alec's POV

I awoke in a stir, wondering what had caused me to come out of my sleep, when I heard a voice shouting.

"Please, just go."

"You never did, did you!"

"I-I never said that." The voice sounded small. Feminine. Either she was always quiet or she was scared. She was stuttering after all.

"You're a f***ing liar (y/n)!"

(Y/n). Why does that sound familiar to me?

I was still half asleep when I heard the glass shatter. And then a louder, fuller voice apologizing; profusely might I add.

"Please just go." I heard her start to sob. The door opened and closed. I'm guessing the guy left.

Her cries got quieter. Hearing then broke my heart. I don't think I had ever felt so much sympathy towards a person in my life.

I stood up and went to the elevator to go to the floor above me. I couldn't leave her. Something about her seemed too innocent to me. I just wanted to protect her.

(Y/n)'s POV

I walked over to the door to look through the peephole. There was no way I was going to open it if it was Ethan.

It wasn't him.

I was about to open the door when I realized my neck was exposed, blood still leaking out of it. I looked around frantically to find something to cover it up.

I glanced over at the counter and laying on it was my oversized, dark grey sweater with a fourth zipper. I threw it on over my t-shirt and zipped it all the way to my chin, before putting my hair over my shoulders on either side and opening the door.

Oh my god. It's him.

Alec's POV

Oh my god. It's her.

Her eyes were bloodshot, and the skin around them was puffy, irritated-looking as if she had been crying for a long time. She was wearing distressed blue jeans, and an oversized sweater that was zipped up all the way past her neck.

Her hair was messy. But a good messy, at that. It was over her shoulders.

I know the appearance I'm describing makes it sound like she looked a mess. But, she honestly looked breathtaking.

"...hi." She spoke. Her voice was raspy, full of pain. It broke me inside. Why does this girl have such a hold on me?

She sniffed, and wiped her nose on her sleeve casually. Rubbing it until it had an irritated appearance.

"Hi..." I forgotten my train of my thought, looking at her. But then quickly remembered when her pained eyes met mine.

"I um. I h-heard glass shatter. And some yelling and then...crying but I was just wondering if you were ok, or if you needed anything or if I could help in any way and-"

"That's sweet of you. For caring. Really thank you, that's so nice of you, but..."

(Y/N's POV)

I looked him in the eyes. Oh god his were beautiful.

"I don't know what you're talking about." I lied. I didn't wanna drag anyone else into this, no matter how sweet and cute that "anyone" was. I had already ruined past friendships from this exact same thing. I don't want him to get hurt because of me.

He just seems too innocent. I just want to protect him.

"A-are you sure?" He asked. I knew he didn't believe me, but he was wondering how much he should pry, or if he should at all.

"Yeah. I didn't hear anything. Maybe you were dreaming?"

He looked down, eyebrows furrowed, as if he was considering this. You're making him think he's insane.

"Or hey," I said, trying to get his attention. "It could've been the wind?" He tilted his head slightly, staring intently at my face. I wasn't sure if he was trying to figure out if I was lying, or if he was trying to figure out why I would lie.

Or if he was just staring. Why would he be just staring? I'm not much to look at. I mean, don't get me wrong, I don't mind. I could stare into his eyes all day.

Alec's POV

Dear god she was so beautiful. I could stare at her all day. Her eyes were the most perfect shade of (y/e/c). Her hair looked stunning even when it was messy. Her face looked pretty even when she'd been crying.

I didn't know why she was lying to me.

"Must've been." She said with a slight shrug of her shoulder.

"Thanks for caring though, that's nice of you."

"Yeah, no problem." I said with a lingering stare. "Are you sure you'll be ok?"

"Yeah I'll be fine. I have to go back in, but thank you, really, you're so sweet."

"Ok. Well, goodnight then."

"Goodnight." She said and closed the door.

I stood outside her door for about thirty seconds before breaking out of my trance and walking back to the elevator, descending back down to my apartment.

(Y/n)'s POV

As soon as I heard his footsteps walk away, getting quieter until I didn't hear them, I sank down against the door, letting my quiet sobs get louder and louder until I was bawling again.

I went over to the bathroom to pull the shard of glass out of my neck. I cried harder and yelled in pain as I pulled it out. I quickly cleaned it before zipping my sweater back up and staring at my reflection.

What on earth is happening today.
