As with most Fae-like creatures, names are power to the Vex. However, it's more of a tiered system.
Tier 1 is your common name, what people call you from day to day. If a Vex has your common name, then you must answer any question wherein your name is days, as long as you don't give away your name or anyone else's.
The Vex have the common names of:
Scar
Cub
Joe
[Redacted]
Tier 2 is your full name, the name that appears in chat. If a Vex has your full name, then they can control your movements and access to other abilities, as long as no names are given away and the action does not put you directly in harm's way.

Tier 3 is your true name. The name irl. If a Vex has your true name, they can make you do anything except give up the name of another. Never let this happen.

On top of that, using their magic increases their hold on you. Hence Scar and Cub's... Situation...
