Song of the fic: Made in the A.M. By One direction

Hurried steps, heavy breaths, shaky legs

Hurried steps, heavy breaths, shaky legs. One text and you practically jumped out your bed. You dressed up as fast as you could, as quietly as you could in the middle of the night. Almost tip toeing, you made your way to the Sakanoshita store, owned by a cranky man in his late 20's, Ukai-san, conveniently happened to be the only convenience store opened this late around the area you lived in.

Although you were aware of your parents tired after a long day of work, your younger brother lost in his deep slumber to the room across yours, you couldn't help but feel a little guilty to be sneaking out after your curfew during a busy week of college. Your parents understood you well and gave you plenty freedom to do as you pleased and your were more than grateful for them.

'Sakonishita store. See you at 12:15am' one look at his previously sent text, and all the overthinking washed away. It's been about 2 weeks since you last saw him, but for you those two weeks lasted longer than 2 lifetimes. You thought about him coming here in the middle of a cold November night, all the way from his dorm which was 45 minutes ride away. You thought about his short black hair, his ebony eyes, and that small mouth which warmly turns into a small smile because of you.

Within 10 minutes you made it to the store, yet your steps were quiet so he did not notice your presence right away. Him leaning against the store's wall, his cold breath coming out in small huffs, his eyes shut as he rested his head on the glass door. You swore you could stand there just looking at him because he was a true work of art, perfect and proportionate and everything one could associate with beauty. When it came to words, you were quiet versatile. But when it came to describing him, you were short to really put his presence in to perspective.

"12:15am huh?", said the captain. "This is not how I expected to be welcomed." Caught off guard, you walked out the shadows, ran a nervous hand through your h/c hair, and sighed "I truly apologise for the inconvenience Mr. Daichi, but this was all I could manage in such a short of time notice" you said sarcastically. "Tsk, dummy! You'll catch a cold" he eyed your open jacket. "No worries, we both know how much you love to pamper me!" you said which made him smile ever so slightly, a light rouge colouring his cheeks. "Whatever" he replied. "Classic Daichi," you gushed. Bright hues of white illuminated the entire store as you two walked around looking at random things as a familiar song played on the speakers:

Won't you stay till the A.M.

All my favorite conversations always made in the A.M.

The understanding, the respect, the contentment you felt towards your now best friend was astonishing. A best friend you cherished so much, and what made it better was the knowledge of your feelings being reciprocated by him.

"Off she goes staring into the abyss again," Daichi's playful tone brought you back to reality. You made a 'throwing up' gesture, "Yeah it's better than looking at you Captain!" you said, sticking your tounge out. He just rolled his eyes and chuckled at the scene before him. Through out middle school, high school and now college, he was always thankful for your cheerful presence, and you for his dependable one.

You and me were raised in the same part of town

Got these scars on the same ground

Remember how we used to kick around just wasting time

Since you two went to different colleges, it was rather difficult to see each other, but both of you equally put in effort to establish a strong friendship, and now you guys are strolling in an empty grocery store, listening to one direction and making random tik toks. He busied himself uploading the recent masterpiece and you started to fetch some midnight snacks.

You know I'm always coming back to this place

You know and I'll say

You know I'm always gonna look for your face

You know

Meanwhile, you kept giggling and taking quick glances at him, and him being the little tease gave you the taste of your own medicine. But soon, the ever-so-sweet lightheartedness of the moment vanished, as your chest heaved with a sudden outburst of emotions. Sometime you wondered if you'd be able to move past your feelings for Daichi. After all, what right did you have over him? It's not like you would even come close to comparing with Sugawara's bubbly charisma, which quite obviously owned Daichi's entire heart.

You looked over to him and saw his eyes loose their initial brightness, the last thing you ever wanted was for him to find out about your little secret. Not only will it ruin your friendship, but will shatter the ties with your childhood best friend.

A sudden silence fell over, heavy with doubts, as you two locked eyes again. "Hey y/n" thankful as he broke the uncomfortable silence.

Won't you stay till the A.M.

"Yeah dadchi?" you inquired, the once lighthearted nickname sounded heavier than a boulder now.

All my favorite conversations always made in the A.M.

"Y/n chan, I-" he was suddenly interrupted by Ukai-San, "aren't you kids planning to get something from here? I have to close the store" he said sleepily. "Yes sir, we'll be leaving right about now" Daichi replied before he paid for all the midnight junk, which now you wish you didn't buy.

Once again outside, the cold of the winter night soon started seeping through despite all the warm layers of clothing. "Daichi-san..." you said but suddenly he was in your personal space, just a few inches between the two of you, as he stood silent in the dark. You stood there too, unable to move, to speak, to blink. Your thoughts and emotions cloudy just like the night outside. "There," said Daichi as he zipped up your jacket. He even took the liberty to expose himself to the disliked cold, and wraped his scarf around you. You pouted and glanced sideways as he continued to cozy your gloveless hands with his own. "As careless as I remember all those years ago," a foggy breath escaping his mouth. "I can't afford babying you around forever, y'know?" he announced to no one in particular. "Yes of course you can, and you will!" you rejected as you huffed your cheeks.

"You'll be late for tomorrow," he reminded you with a gentle smile as he began to part his way. "Hey, don't leave right now," you protested despite his quickened pace. His eyes landed on yours, "It's not like I'm going to disappear into thin air, y/n-chan," he lightly shuffled your hair, making you shiver more if it was possible. With each passing second, his figure got smaller and farther away from yours. Maybe some words are better left unspoken, you thought as he left you standing outside a small convenience store amidst winter night.

Just like that, he went home to a white haired angel with a smile brighter than fresh snow, and y/n went home wishing her unannounced feelings remain buried and eventually melt away, like the old snow outside.
