the tall purple haired arrived home, greeting his mother who was doing gardening work.

"hey bin how was school?" she asked, pulling weeds out of her flower patch. "it was good. we also got a pen pal today." he said, crouching next to her to help.

"that's great sweetie. who did you get?"

"i'm not sure but it says they're from america." he said, nervous of her reaction. "america? but you don't know any english." she joked. "i- i know the basics. they could teach me. it'd be great to know it fully before i go to america to study. plus what if they know korean?"

"that's very true but i highly doubt they'd know korean and how will you be able to converse with them if you only know words like hi, bye, and thank you?" his mother spoke.

she was right. soobin only knew a few words and it's not like google translate is 100% accurate but he was at least gonna try to talk to the person and also start learning the language.

he excused himself from his mother, heading upstairs towards the bedroom and shutting the door behind him. placing his bag by the door, he plopped is back down onto his bed, pulling out his phone and the piece of paper.

opening his phone app, he typed in the number, naming it as 'pen pal'. he opened a new chat, sending the person a quick message.

hey! i'm soobin from TU! i got your number from the pen pal system.

he went over the message a few more times to make sure it's perfect before hitting send. he was quite nervous. he didn't know what kind of person his pen pal is but he really hopes they're not a bully or a rude person.

it was only 4pm right now so he wasn't expecting a reply since it'll prolly be dark over in america so he just locked his phone and started on his homework for today.

it was only an hour later when his mother called him down for dinner.

"soobin-ah. what's gonna happen to the expenses?" his mother asked worriedly as she set down his food in front of him at the table.

"oh that's all taken care of by the school so you don't have to worry about it mom." he assured her with a smile.

"oh that's good. are beomgyu and kai doing it too?"

"only beomgyu. kai finds it creepy to be talking to a stranger from another place."

the two conversed as they ate dinner, soobin having zero clue that his phone from his bedroom went off.
