Part 9

*Next Week; Josie's PoV*

I was with Ellie, Miranda, Evelyn and Vic at Vere's favorite coffee shop. She asks us to meet us here. Alex was supposed to be here too, but she's busy.

I haven't seen her since we talked about our kiss on New Years. I mean we've been texting here and there sometimes, but the conversations don't last long because she's busy.

I see that it's 2:25pm.

Vere said to be here by 2:30pm.

Her birthday was 2 days ago, and we go back to school tomorrow.

My phone vibrates and I see I got a message from Alex.

Alex: is Vere there yet?

Me: no

Alex: tell me what happens and tell her I'm sorry I couldn't go

Me: mkay

I lock my phone and put it in my hoodie.

"Hey guys" I look up and see Verenice sitting down in the seat next to me. I give her a hug.

"So what's up? You only call us here if it's important" Ellie mentions.

"Yeah.. umm" I see her look at all of us, "wait, where's Alex?" all eyes immediately look at me.

"Oh right. She couldn't make it, she's busy doing I don't know what. She told me to apologize for her not showing up"

"Oh well that's okay, you can just tell her later I guess" I nod.

"Okay so what's so important Vere?" Vic asks.

She stays quiet and I see her playing with her fingers.

She always does that when she's sad and has bad news to tell us.

After a while of her being quiet she clears her throat.

"I'm going back to Mexico"

I felt my heart drop.

"W-what?" I look at her.

"When?" Miranda asks.

"Sunday"

"But why?" Ellie asks and I see her tearing up in Vic's arms.

"We've been struggling for a while now. So my parents, my sister and brother decided we should move back to Mexico. I'm going to have no family left here, so I can't stay. Plus I'm still underage"

I look down tearing up as well.

I know I'm still going to have my other best friends but Verenice leaving is the worst because her and I are the closest out of everyone else in our friend group.

"Let's go to the park" everyone looks at me.

"Our park" I see Miranda and Vere smile, knowing which park I'm talking about.

"This brings back memories" Miranda says as she leans back against the tree that luckily was still here after all these years.

"What makes this park so special? Or this small part of the park" Evelyn asks.

"We always came here every single day after school for play dates when we were in elementary school. We still came throughout middle school but not as often. We sort of stopped coming here when we got to high school because we were all busy. Miranda had band, I had colorguard, and Verenice had work"
