Luke's pov

***********************************************************************************************************

"So, where are we going?"Courtney, my best friend ever, asked for the fifty-second time that day.

"You'll see,"I reply, grinning. "It's a surprise."

"Ugh! Just tell me. Please!"

"Nope,"I say, popping the p.

Coco crosses her arms and pouts, which looks funny, since we're walking. I laugh.

"Meanie,"she says.

"Sorry, Coke. You're funny."

"And you're mean."

"No, I'm not. Joel is."

"Not really. He made tea for me when I was sick,"she counters.

"Because I couldn't. You were laying on top of me."

"So? You could've set me to the side."

"What side?"I ask. "We took up the whole couch."

"You did. I only took up three-fourths of it."

"Because you're short."

"You're rather rude today, Mr. Smallbone,"Court tells me.

"Perhaps, Miss Helm,"I reply.

"So, are we here yet?"

"Almost." I take her hand and cross the road to the left and stop in front of a cafe called Cozy's. "Okay, now we're here."

"Why are we going to a cafe?'

"Cause why not?"

"Fair point."

We head inside and take a seat. I'm so nervous. What if she says no?

"So, what's up?"Courtney asks.

"Whaddya mean?" I reply, tapping on the table.

"You're fidgeting. And you asked me to hang out- without all our other friends."

"What's so wrong about that?"

"You're being weird, Luke James,"Coco decides.

"As are you, Courtney I-still-don't-know-your-middle-name."

Courtney laughs and gently bops my nose.

"Ow,"I complained.

"Joel's right; you are a wimp."

"Hey! You're so mean."

"No, I'm not."

She pouts and I laugh. Court is so adorable and fun. I love her.

The meal goes by quickly. Courtney doesn't eat much, but does have dessert (because who can turn that down?). I learn all about her, stuff she never talks about when she'd with our other friends. Like how she used to surf a lot, back when she lived in Florida. Or that she loves pugs and hopes to own one someday.

Once we finish eating, I take her hand and lead her outside.

"Where now, Lukas?"she asks.

"You'll see,"I reply. "And don't call me Lukas."

"Lukey Bear."

I stop and look at her. "Really/"

Coco grins. She knows I can never be mad at her.

We walk a bit, until we reach a little park. My hands start to sweat. I lead Courtney over to a little clearing with a stone bench. I turn my body around and take the candy out of my jacket pocket. I open the Ring Pop.

"Whatcha doin', Lukey?"Court asks, jumping around, trying to see what I was up to.

I spin around, get down on one knee, and present the Ring Pop to her.

"Luke,"Courtney says nervously.

"Courtney Helm,"I begin.

"Oh no."

I laugh. "Willyoumakemethehappiestmanontheplanetandgooutwithme?"

Court blinks, then says, "I don't know what you just said, but okay."

"Great!"

I slide the Ring Pop onto her finger, then stand up.

"So, wait,"she says. "Are we getting married?"

I crack up. "No, not yet,"I manage to say.

Coco signs in relief. "Okay, good."

"Wait, why?"

"My parents would kill me."

"Oh, yeah, true."

"But I'd totally love to marry you in the future."

Courtney walks away. I stare at her. When I finally comprehend what she said, I run after her.

"Wait!" I exclaim. "You really mean that?"

Court doesn't reply. Instead she turns a bit, flashes the RIng Pop and grins. I take that as a yes.
