"EVANS. PLEASE, SLOW down." James called as the two climbed the stairs to the common room, him trailing behind. He had questioned his decision to follow her back multiple times but Eleanor believed that it was a good idea so he went with it. Though the closer they got to the common room, the more he regretted this choice. But then she stopped. Sucking in a deep breath, she turned to face him and her features were frozen - staring him down. Thoughts were rushing through her mind as she tried to hold back her tears. Not here. Her face was hollow and her hands were quivering slightly. She knew that Severus had been slipping away for a while but hearing the word slip out of his mouth shattered her. After everything that she had confided in him and he still dared to call her a Mudblood.

"What do you want, Potter?" She said in a monotonous voice, clearly done for the day.  There was no inkling of care left in her as she watched the bespectacled boy approach. If Eleanor and Mary had allowed him to act in such a way to Severus then he probably deserved what he got. But there were these thoughts in her mind that were disagreeing with her, telling her that Snape was the good guy in this situation. He wasn't. What was happening?

"Look, I'm sorry." He began, causing the redhead to frown. All he wanted to do was explain what happened but he couldn't. Over the years, James had changed drastically due to his friends and the predicaments that he had to help them through. Lily didn't see that, he never bragged about his achievements that held meaning because he didn't need to. The people that needed to know, knew. Except for Lily, she still looked at him like he was the eleven-year-old boy that she first met. "I'm sorry." James repeated, not knowing what else to say.

"No, you're not." The redhead replied quietly, looking down at him. If she wasn't there, it would have been much worse for Severus.  James didn't utter a word, understanding that she was frustrated. About to leave, she stopped herself and turned back to the boy. "You know what, I hoped that you changed but you clearly haven't..." She trailed off, a look of disappointment on her face.

"No." James said, not trying to be angered by the situation. She was simply not in the right headspace at the moment.

"No?" She challenged, slightly confused. When they had argued in the past, the boy often resorted to silence and let her vent. Today was not that day.

"You don't get to stand there and say that I haven't changed when you refuse to treat me any different to the way you did in first year." The boy told her, standing taller than he was before. "Even if I haven't changed, why would you hope that I did? Would you like me to apologise for not being who you want me to be? Honestly, you have made it perfectly clear over the years that you despised me. Maybe the one that hasn't changed, is you." James argued, this time rendering the girl speechless. She had been caught up with how everyone acts that she forgot about herself and he wasn't wrong, it seemed to dawn on her at once.
