The next day was the same; I didn’t do anything until after supper when I went to Devan. We didn’t converse at all this time and when he fell asleep, I left again.

The day after that, I was expected to be helping around the house again, though not much. At lunch, Nate called me into the kitchen.

“You wanna bring this to Dev?” He asked, holding out a plate of food to me.

I just looked at the plate, keeping my distance.

“Scout, come on. All you have to do is bring it to him and help him sit up. You know he can’t use that arm at all.”

I nodded, but didn’t move closer. Nate rolled his eyes and set the plate down and went back to whatever he was doing before. Then I took the plate and went up to Devan.

“I hate this so much,” He said as I helped him sit up.

I did my best to help him without touching him too much.

“I don’t like being stuck here, not able to move around or do everything for myself.”

I just nodded and started to leave.

“Hey, Scout?” He asked as I reached the door.

I turned to face him.

“Do you, uh, wanna stay here? Just to chat. Company is always nice.”

I hesitated before sitting on the end of the bed. He patted the spot next to him for me to sit there, but I shook my head.

“You’ve been quiet lately,” He said.

I couldn’t help but give him an are-you-kidding-me look.

“What?”

“You always yell at me when I talk.”

“I don’t mind you talking, it’s just that you need to know when you should and shouldn’t talk.” He was quiet while he ate for a moment, then he asked, “Why did you help me?”

His question caught me off guard. I don’t know why I did it. So that’s what I told him.

“I don’t know.”

“You could have just left me there. But you didn’t. No one else would have gotten to me quick enough. Once again I owe you a life debt.”

When I didn’t say anything, he continued talking.

“How did you get us here? I don’t remember anything after I was hit and fell.”

“Um, well after I got to you, I managed to get you into this truck and brought you back here.”
