I got in a car with Nate and he drove us to Owen's apartment where Kyle and Will were trying to talk to him.

"Owen?" I knocked on the door. "It's Scout. Can you let me in?"

Nothing.

"It's about your family."

I jumped back when two knives went through the door. "Go away!"

"Owen, I know you're listening. They didn't forget you, or replace you. Marcus was lying. They are still there, perfectly safe. Even ask Devan, he saw them. They are dying to be with you again. Sarah still wants to be in the CIA and Devan taught her how to break someone's nose."

I don't know why I told him the last part about Sarah, but it worked. With a click, the door was unlocked. I slipped inside.

The place was a mess. The lights were out, so I couldn't really see, and as I made my way over to where Owen was standing, I tripped over multiple things.

"They are still waiting for you to bring the money to free them. They still believe that you can save them."

"I can't. It's too much money."

"You don't even need the money."

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"The five million that was stolen was supposed to be going to Devan's dad for a loan from a long time ago. Marcus still owes it to Devan. So you should talk to Devan about paying it back."

"Are you serious?"

"Dead serious."

"You have got to be kidding me!" He slammed his fist into the wall.

"As soon as I go back, I am going to think of ways that I can get them out."

"You're going to help me?"

"Of course. They shouldn't be punished for something that Zack did and they shouldn't be there because you don't even owe money."

"Thank you." Suddenly he hugged me. "Thank you so much."

"You're welcome." I hugged him back, which felt weird, but not at the same time. "I can't stay. I need to talk to Devan."

I told Nate to bring me back to Devan's house and get me inside.

"I don't know how smart of an idea this is," Nate said as we walked up the front porch.

"I don't care," I said.

Nate opened the front door and led the way up to the office. But Devan wasn't there, so we headed to his room. Nate knocked before letting himself in. I stayed in the hallway.

"Is she gone?" Devan asked.

"No," Nate answered.

"Tell her to leave."

"Do you really think she'll listen?"

"Fine then, leave her outside. Eventually she'll go crawling back to her fiancé."

Nate hesitated, probably wondering about the fiancé thing, but then said, "Why don't you go talk to her? If you just leave her out there, you're just going to screw up what was between you two."

"I'm going to screw it up?! No, she's the one who messed it all up! She decided that I was just like all the other guys she's had sex with and told me to leave. It was all a game to her! Build me up just so she can tear me down!" He was suddenly quieter. "I thought that I had finally found something good in my life. But I meant nothing to her. I knew I would never be good enough."
