Just as I was entering my room Devan called me.

“Scout, get ready to go,” He told me.

“What for?” I asked.

“You’re coming to the meeting with me.”

“What have I told you about asking me properly?”

He rolled his eyes. “Will you go with me to the meeting?”

“No.”

I went into my room.

“I’m not taking no for an answer.” He stopped me from closing the door.

“There is no way that I am going to be near that many men.”

“I’ll keep them away from you.”

“It doesn’t matter how far from me they are. All that will be going through my head is that they are going to rape me. I still worry that you or one of the other boys are going to.”

“Come on, Scout.”

“Why don’t you go get raped and then be surrounded by a bunch of women who will no doubt be looking you over, even if you have someone next to you.”

“I don’t really know if a girl can-”

“I don’t care. I don’t want to go.”

“I don’t like going alone.”

“Why don’t you take Hannah or Emmy or Mary?”

“I was going to let them go.”

“What?” I stopped just before I was going to flop onto the bed.

“I’ve talked it over with the lads and we agreed that the information that they know is old and useless to anyone who wants it. So if they want to leave, then I would let them.”

“Oh.” I sat down on the bed.

“And you have heard recent information.”

“And I apparently know information about Meselva.”

“Please can you just go with me? I’ll…take you to dinner afterwards.”

“Are you bribing me?”

“Uh, sure.”

“It worked.”
