“Why do you do that?” Devan suddenly asked.

“Do what?” I asked.

“You are always arguing back, until randomly you just shut up.”

“I know when it is best to seal my lips. Right now you seemed to be getting angry, and being in a small area with you in possession of three knives, me with none, it seemed best to not argue.”

“What makes you think that I would use a knife on you?”

“You’re not exactly predictable.”

“Neither are you. One moment you’re lying around and doing absolutely nothing, and then you run off.”

“You didn’t expect me to try to run away?”

“No, I knew you would try, but I can’t know when. So of course it’s going to be a surprise.”

“Don’t you like surprises?”

“No, not at all.”

“Why not?”

“Most of my surprises are when I’m just out getting something that I need and then I get shot.”

“Sounds like fun.” I lay back down on my back. “You should put a window in the ceiling in here and cut away the braches so you can see the stars.”

“I’m not exactly an architect.”

“Did you build this thing?”

“Yeah.”

“Well that’s better than what most people can do. All you gotta do is cut a hole out of the top.”

“It’s more difficult than that. It’s metal up there for the roof to keep it dry in here because wooden boards would eventually wear away from the rain. And when it rains, I’m going to want to keep that closed, so I would have to try to make something that can cover it up when I need it to.”

“Ideas for the future.”

“I hate to break it to you, but my future is pretty packed.”

“You found time to build this before. It will take less time to do that little adjustment.”

“I made this when my dad was still alive, when I had time.”

“The leader can’t say that he wants a day or two off?”

“No, I can’t.”

“Then what have you been doing today?”
