Kiara Carrera was sure that if someone were to interview her on her deathbed about the best day of her life, she was fairly certain she'd think back to the day Sarah Cameron and Bianca Prescott invited her to save baby sea turtles and wipe away a single stray teardrop.
For it was those girls that saved her from her complete and total social suicide at the Kook Academy, freshman year.
"Sarah, what are you doing?" Kiara giggled, glancing over her shoulder at where Sarah was jumping wildly across the shore, her arms flailing in the air.
"Keeping the seagulls away!" The Cameron girl called, barely sparing a look back.
"The birds have to eat too," Bianca Prescott rolled her eyes, "It's called the circle of life, S- we literally watched The Lion King last week."
Kiara's mouth hung agape at the girl leaning forward on her elbows, patiently waiting for the eggs to hatch- she was almost sure that Bianca did not have a heart because who couldn't care about baby sea turtle? And yes, Bianca knew she wasn't the easiest person to be around, but she had Sarah, and frankly that's all she really needed.
Kiara almost felt hurt, the thought of getting up and joining Sarah sounded much more appealing than being with Bianca in that moment, but the sound of a quiet crack made her halt.
A small gasp erupted from Bianca's lips, "They're hatching!"
Kiara also paused, her doe eyes widening as slowly as the eggs began to hatch and small, pale beings emerged from the sandy dune. The two girls watched in awe as the turtles climbed out and traversed down the shore.
Kiara, entranced by their cuteness reached out to pet one, but her hand was quickly swatted her away by Bianca, "Hey!" The Carrera girl protested, "What gives?"
"You can't touch them!" Bianca scowled, narrowing her eyes, "If you touch them, they'll get confused 'cause they imprint on the sand or something."
"Oh," Kiara's eyes widened slightly, she didn't know this. It was the first time she was learning that maybe Bianca did know more than she let on and that she actually cared. Though, she still couldn't understand what was so bad if people knew she wasn't a complete and total bitch.
"Come on!" Kiara stood up abruptly, grabbing the girl's hand, "We have to help Sarah- it's about to be turtle genocide out here!"
Kiara spent the rest of her evening with the girls, shooing away the oncoming birds as they attempted to swoop at the turtles. And eventually, all the turtles had made their way into the ocean and the girls stood at the shoreline, glancing out into the horizon that painted an amber-lavender hue across the sky.
"You know," Bianca mumbled softly, the cool breeze wafting at her hair, "After fifteen years, those turtles are going to come back and have their own babies here."
"Fifteen years?" Kiara scoffed, "That's a long time."
"Yeah, but it's fine," Sarah hummed, a small smile on her face, "Because after fifteen years we're going to come back and do it all over again."
At this, Bianca frowned slightly, "Are we going to be friends after fifteen years? We'll be all- like- old and wrinkly."
"We will be," Sarah laughed lightly, "I know it- I'm a psychic."
At this, the girls began giggling hysterically, "Okay- predict something then," Bianca challenged.
The blonde rubbed her temples as if she was deep in concentration, closing her eyes before muttering, "I predict that one of us is going to get wet, very, very soon."
"What-" Kiara frowned before Sarah ducked down and splashed a wave of cold water at her, "Sarah!" She stood in shock before laughing loudly and splashing the girl back.
The next wave was aimed directly at Bianca as Kiara used her arms to push the water towards her, "Kie- I just got this skirt!" She whined, glancing down at her now drenched outfit. Sarah rolled her eyes, a large grin on her face before she dragged Bianca further into the water, much to her protests, "Sarah- no-"
Her voice was cut off when a large wave engulfed all three of them, spluttering out salt water that they swallowed. The girls continued their water fight into the night, not a care in the world between them, the ocean and the starry sky.
After a while, they made their way back to the shore, all sporting small smiles of giddy excitement. Kiara turned to her new best friends, "You really think we'll still be friends after fifteen years?"
"Pinky promise," Bianca chimed in, offering her pinky finger between them. Sarah joined her smallest finger and glanced over at the last girl to continue.
Kiara Carrera glanced up at the two, she'd only met today, but had never felt closer to any other person in her life. And so she entwined her little finger with theirs and made her unconditional, soul-binding swear.
"Pinky promise."
