"Home sweet home."

JJ Maybank glanced out the window at his house as the car slowed to a stop. His back remained straightened in his seat, feeling his ears burn at the overgrown grass and his run-down shack of a residence.

He resisted the urge to glance over his shoulder, not wanting to see Bianca's expression eyebrows furrowed together or the way her lips curl in disgust that would inevitably be there at the view of his below-than average income household.

Kiara sent the boy a small comforting nod, her lips pursed in a thin line and with a soft exhale, JJ stepped out of the car. It was only when the backseat door slammed shut beside him did he halt, his eyebrows furrowed together.

"What are you doing?" He paused with a frown, turning to see Bianca getting out of the car.

"I'm coming with you," She told him like it was the most obvious thing in the world, her arms crossed over her chest.

Bianca had barely managed to take one step before JJ stood in front of her, blocking her path, "No, you're not."

The girl tried to push past him, but he merely sidestepped in front of her again, her back pressing against the metallic car. Bianca narrowed her eyes, glancing up at the boy, "Move, JJ."

"This will only take a second," He told her gently, the azure of his eyes softening. He was wrong, there was no scowl, or sneer or disgust of any kind on her face, only a sort of concern that anybody except him would misinterpret for irritation.

"JJ," She protested, her lips forming a small pout. She didn't like the idea of the boy going in by himself, but he'd already reached across and opened the door behind her before ushering her back in.

"B," He warned lowly with a pointed look so she didn't follow after him, "Stay in the car."

Bianca may not have wanted him to go in there by himself, but JJ wanted her as far away from here as possible. He just wasn't ready for her to see this part of him- not yet, at least.

JJ sent a small nod to Kiara and almost instantly the car door locked. Bianca reached out to pull the handle, but with no avail, "The child lock- seriously?" She scoffed loudly.

Kiara ignored the comment, eyes directed solely at the blond boy, "You sure you don't want us to come? Cause I'll come."

"Nah," The boy merely shook his head, running a hand through his hair, "I'm good," But Bianca could tell by the way he kept clenching his jaw and the furrow between this brows that he was definitely not good.

JJ sent sent Bianca a lasting glance before he headed towards the house, boots treading the brown and wilted grass.

Bianca sighed, leaning backward in her seat with her arms crossed over her chest. Her knee bounced nervously in the silence of the van and she felt her stomach do little flips at the thought of JJ in there alone. Bianca could barely think straight, let alone hold a conversation, but when Kiara piped up, she couldn't help but frown, "I was wrong."

"What?" Bianca narrowed her eyes, nervousness momentarily forgotten.

"I said," She sighed softly, "I was wrong."

"You usually are," Bianca shrugged nonchalantly, which only made Kiara scowl, "But about what?"

The Carrera girl rolled her eyes, "You and JJ- he acts all tough, but he's a really good guy and also kind of a wild card," She turned to the backseat, "He isn't some toy that you can play with, okay?"

Bianca scoffed, "It's not like that, Kie-"

"I know," Kiara muttered, "I get that now, but I don't want him getting hurt because you need a rebound from Rafe Cameron- I know you still care about him."

Bianca glared out the window, because although Kiara was right, but it didn't mean she cared about JJ any less.

"He's different with you," Kiara continued, her hands hovering over the steering wheel, "Just don't take that for granted."

As if on cue, the grill of the front door slammed shut and JJ took large steps towards the car. Bianca straightened in her seat, noticing his head bowed slightly, shielding his face from her view.

"JJ?" Bianca questioned, brows creased together in concern. Instead of sliding into the front seat beside Kiara, he opened the backdoor and sat beside her wordlessly.

"I'm fine," He snapped through gritted teeth when he noticed her gaze scanning him intently. Bianca took this as a sign that he didn't really want to talk at all and so she remained silent while Kiara turned the ignition back on and let him be.

"How'd it go?" Kiara glanced at him through the rearview mirror, her voice low.

JJ didn't mean to snap so harshly, but he was trying really hard not to let the tears pricking his eyes fall in front of the girls. After a few seconds, he mumbled "Got the keys," Glancing up at her with red-rimmed eyes while flashing the pair of keys in his hand.

But Bianca didn't care about the keys or the stupid boat, she was more focused on him. She felt the words get stuck in her throat, "Did he hurt you?"

"No- he uh-" The blond boy mumbled softly, glancing out the window at his house as Kiara began to drive away, "He told me that he loves me."

Bianca felt her heart wrench for the boy beside her and she quickly entwined her hand in his. When JJ squeezed her hand lightly, she squeezed back and just like that, JJ felt braver.
