"Last place they're gonna look because of how stupid it is," JJ scoffed, rolling his eyes as the rest of the group got out of the car.
"Wheezie, listen to me," Bianca leaned down to her level, placing her hands on the girl's shoulders, "I need you sneak back in and unlock Sarah's door, okay? Don't tell your parent's we're here and don't get caught, got it?"
"Got it," Wheezie winked at her.
"See you, twerp," JJ threw his hand up in a wave.
"Bye, JJ," Wheezie grinned before slinking off into the dark, bike in tow.
"Perfectly focused," Pope muttered next, his gaze never wavering from his feet as he followed after Kiara.
"You sure this is a good idea?" JJ frowned.
"She's the only one who can clear John B," Kiara added, hoisting herself up over the wall of the Cameron house without waiting for the boy's response.
"Hey," JJ gently grasped Bianca's wrist before she could leave, turning her around to face him, "Be careful."
Bianca wanted roll her eyes or make fun of how he was starting to sound like John B, but one look at the seriousness in JJ's eyes had her reeling. She'd been so self-absorbed in her own turmoil, she didn't even think of how it had been affecting JJ- of course he didn't want to hear about her ex-boyfriend and their relationship. So she sucked up her pride and shifted closer to the boy.
Bianca's smiled softly at him, "I'm sorry, JJ."
At this, the boy's eyebrows furrowed as if he'd never heard those words strung together in a sentence, "What?"
"I'm sorry," She continued apologetically, "This isn't fair to you."
"B, what are you talking about?"
"I'm just saying you shouldn't have to deal with all this shit," Bianca rambled, trying to find the right words, "And- and hear me talk about Rafe all the fucking time- you don't deserve that."
JJ wanted to scoff, "B, I don't care about all that," He shook his head quickly before hesitating, "It's fine, I'm okay- I just hate feeling like I'm still competing with Rafe fucking Cameron."
"You're not," She wrapped her arms around his neck before her eyes fluttered shut and she placed a soft kiss against his lips, "You never were, I promise."
And it was the truth. In books, she keep hearing this idea that love takes your breath away, but she didn't think that was right anymore. JJ didn't take away anything. No, he was the one who reminded her to breathe when she'd forgotten how. He was the one who knew her heart better than she did and reminded it to beat when she felt irreparably broken. He gave her more than she'd ever hoped for, and that was a love Rafe would never understand.
