The scent of Pumpkin Pasties sweetened the air as Lucy entered the Great Hall one morning. A fortnight had already gone by since Draco had revealed the mysterious Vanishing Cabinet to her. Together, the two had been diligently trying to learn how they could possibly mend it.
Meanwhile, snow accumulated into thick, fluffy blankets coating the grounds. The Black Lake replaced its normal choppy waters for a coat of bluish ice over its surface. The holidays were around the corner, and spirits were high.
After waking up late, she hurried over to her friends who were seated at their usual place at the Slytherin table in deep discussion. Draco diverted his gaze to her with a knowing look before nodding his head to the seat beside him.
"Arielle!" Theo was exclaiming as Lucy sat down. "We have our next Quidditch game in two weeks! How come you weren't at practice the last two days?"
Lucy picked up a pumpkin pasty and some bacon as she watched the conversation unfold.
"Sorry Theodore, I've just felt like shit lately!" shrugged Arielle. "Maybe I've got Dragon Pox or something,"
"Well, you better start showing up, or I'll get Urquhart to fill in!" threatened Theo before taking an angry bite out of his muffin.
"Oh bugger off mate, she's allowed to rest," defended Blaise.
"Lucy? What about you? Still not up to play some Quidditch?"
"Definitely not, Theo," Lucy immediately responded as she placed down her pumpkin juice. Theo huffed and turned to Blaise and began discussing Quidditch tactics. Meanwhile, Lucy felt Draco's hand rest gently on her thigh beneath the table. The feeling made her nerves tingle as she managed another sip of pumpkin juice.
However, her attention was quickly diverted when a sleek black owl silently landed on her plate. A small scroll of parchment was in its sharp beak. Tentatively, Lucy reached out and retrieved the scroll before handed the owl a small piece of pumpkin pasty before it swooshed off. Her blood ran cold as she recognized the thick black scribble on the parchment.
"Who is it from?" asked Draco in a hushed tone, peering over her shoulder at the scroll. Lucy slowly nodded before unraveling the parchment with a deep breath.
"My father," she murmured in response.
Lucille,
I am expecting your prompt return to Armstrong Estate during your upcoming winter holiday. It is imperative that you do, so do not disappoint me. It's time. Don't be late.
Dread filled her veins as she processed what she had just read. She felt the eyes of all her friends staring deep into her skin. Lucy quickly crumpled up the parchment and stood up from the table, tossing it into the great iron fireplace as she hurried out of the Great Hall without a word.
