Winter arrived in a flurry of frozen snowflakes. Snow pelted the grounds viciously night after night, freezing Hogwarts into a frosty wilderness. Lucy was relieved the day had finally come for winter break. It was a miracle that the students were even getting one, and it took plenty of convincing for Snape to finally agree. He was not aware of her plans to go on the run, and nor did he need to be.

Lucy had carefully crafted a letter to her father expressing that she'd be spending the holiday with Arielle with her family. The man would be far too unbothered to think twice about it.

The large group of students that were leaving marched in unison towards the carriages, their feet sinking into the icy snow. Lucy was grateful to have worn her tall boots underneath her robes as she climbed into the carriage beside Arielle and Blaise. She watched as the dementors floating around the castle became smaller and smaller until they were mere specks in the sky.

The train was full of people, yet was eerily silent as each compartment filled up. Lucy sat anxiously across from the couple that mirrored her worried expression back to her.

"I took the liberty of adding an Undetectable Extension charm to your bag," Arielle informed her, nodding to the satchel beside Lucy. "I also added about a week's worth of food from the kitchens,"

"Bloody hell woman, you're brilliant!" piped up Blaise beside her.

"Thanks," Lucy smiled apprehensively. She had changed out of her robes and into her thick wooly grey petticoat and Muggle jeans that Arielle had given her. She was also handed a lumpy looking knit beanie to put on so she would blend in with Muggles.

Lucy had never been so happy to see the snowy hills of the English countryside. Normally she dreaded leaving Hogwarts, but nothing could possibly be worse than the Carrows.

Before she knew it, the scarlet train was pulling into King's Cross Station. Lucy pulled the beanie over her head before grabbing her bag and leading the way off of the train. She had packed the belongings of her trunk within the satchel with the help of magic.

Frightened faces met her on the platform. Parents were quickly escorting their kids away, glancing around worriedly.

"Ah, Lucille," came a familiar voice. "How nice it is for you to show up,"

She glanced up in horror to come face to face with Yaxley. He was dressed in rather ugly dark burgundy robes and had slicked his long blonde hair into a ponytail.

"Er-hello?" she questioned as he sneered at her.

"Surely you didn't think your father was stupid enough to believe your letter, girl," he snapped. "Now come on, I don't have all day,"

"About that," Lucy said hesitantly as she backed up from him to put distance between them. "I really should be on my way,"

With that, she took off on a mad dash through the platform. Lucy weaved in and out of the people who quickly moved out of her way.

Lucy pushed through the magical barrier of Platform Nine and Three Quarters with Arielle and Blaise on her heels.

Muggles fluttered past them in a hurry to their destinations. They weren't oblivious to the war waging around them either. Their faces showed stress and worry beneath their under eyes. Lucy did not mind these things as they raced through the bright and airy station.

"We just have to make it outside, then we can Apparate!" shouted Arielle as Lucy flung open the doors, nearly toppling over a Muggle family.

Her lungs were burning from sprinting, but Lucy pushed through her breathlessness as she dared to glance behind her to see Yaxley just a short distance away with an angry look upon his face.

The three gathered together and joined hands. Yaxley's brutish face was merely a blur as the world warped around them and Lucy feels her inside twist together and has the distinct feeling of being squished before they re-Apparate.

They land in a very quiet forest, and the only sounds are that of their panting and birds chirping. Lucy looked around at the frost covered trees and thick shrubbery.

"Do you think we're safe now?" asked Blaise breathlessly. "Where are we?"

"I used to come here as a child," stated Arielle before she takes a seat on the frozen, leaf covered ground. "We're a couple miles from my home,"

Lucy sighed and took out her wand, beginning to cast protection spells.

"I don't suppose you packed a tent?" she retorted while casting shields around them.

"As a matter of fact, I did," smirked Arielle as she pointed her wand into her satchel and muttered a spell. The large wrappings of a tent sprung out and fell to the cold grounds.

Lucy couldn't help but bark out a laugh as Arielle and Blaise began setting it up.

Despite the countless times Lucy had plotted her escape from Hogwarts in her head, it had never included the possibility of third-wheeling in a tent in the middle of the woods.

"Nobody's going to find us, right?" asked Arielle, biting her nails with worry.

The three sat huddled around the small fireplace in the dingy tent that Arielle had purchased from an odd bloke in Knockturn Alley. They had all pulled on their thick winter coats.

"I put up every protection spell I could think of," Lucy replied as she checked her watch. It was late, and the sound of insects chirping outside was prominent.

"Might as well get some sleep," she suggested to the couple. "I'll take first watch,"

Lucy smiled softly at the two before she pushed through the tan flaps of the tent to sit on the ground right outside of it.

Despite the thick brush of the trees, stars are visibly sprinkled across the night sky. Lucy almost wished for a moment she could be among them as she gazed out at the unforgiving cold of the early winter forest.

A soft wind would blow through the woods every so often, accompanied by the occasional hoot of an owl. Lucy secretly prayed it would be delivering a letter from Draco, telling her that he didn't hate her. But like the brutal cold of the night, Lucy was left disappointed and stung by the chill of the night. Nothing made sense anymore, that much was for sure.

That was until, a bright pale blue light flared in the distance. She rocketed to her feet, wand in hand as it began to move closer and materialize.

A Patronus— a Doe.

Glimmering and opalescent, the lithe deer glided towards her with utter grace, stepping seamlessly through the rippling barrier of charms Lucy had worked tirelessly on.

The doe came to a stop and simply bowed its head at her before dashing away deep into the darkness of the forest.
