-Kaydan's P.O.V-
I rush into the front doors of "Wayne's". "I'm here, I'm here!" I exclaim.
Luke comes out from the back to greet me. "Wow, you're actually early. How did that happen?"
I shrug as he inspects me.
"Huh...I see. Go get in gear, the trainees should be here any second."
I nod then hurry off to the back room. David greets me as he puts on some gloves.
"Are you working with the bus boys?" I question.
"Yeah," he groans. "Hopefully part chefs too."
I laugh saying, "Chin up! Maybe you'll get lucky."
"Guys, two of them are here!"
I walk back to the front with David right behind me. In front of Luke are two girls.
"David, Kaydan, I'd like you to meet Megan and Sarah," he says as we step closer.
I shake bot of their hands as they step up to me, and David does the same.
"I'm going to be working with Sarah as hostess, while David gets to work with Megan in the kitchen," Luke begins.
"What about me?"
"You get to wait for the others to show up. They should be arriving shortly."
"Fine." I sit down at the nearest table and place my head down on it.
As I'm waiting I hear Luke explaining the reservation list to Sarah, and how to check for people trying to lie their way in. I can also hear a few dishes break in the kitchen, and a female voice squeak a sorry. I smile as I can picture David giving a weary smile, saying it's okay.
In that moment Luke calls me to the front. I meet up with him to see two guys standing before him.
"Kaydan, this is Jasper and Simon. They are going to help you wait tables."
"Nice to meet you guys," I say shaking their hands.
"Like wise," Jasper says taking it.
Simon nods to agree.
"What time are we opening?" I ask Luke. "5:30 like usual."
"Oh shi-" I catch myself seeing Luke glare daggers at me, "-She! She is good at that!" I say, transforming it into a complement for Sarah.
She blushes and states that it's nothing.
"Alright guys, follow me!" I feel way to excited. This is the first time I've had subordinates! I hand them their aprons and notepads, teach them how to clock out and in, and show them abbreviations for all the items on the menu. "Make sure you write it so that David can read it, alright?"
"Gotcha," Jasper responds, while Simon opts to keep it nonverbal and nods again.
"You don't talk much, do you?" I ask him.
He smiles shyly.
"I have no problem with that. As long as you can make it work with the customers."
He shoots me a thumbs up as Jasper says, "He'll make it work, believe me."
Luke gathers us all around as opening time approaches. "Alright guys, today shouldn't be that busy, so Kaydan, David and I are going to be evaluating you from the booth at the back. If you need help, let us know. Think you can handle it?"
They all yell enthusiastically...except for Simon. He beats his chest instead.
Gotta admit, I like the kid's spunk.
"Awesome. Good luck guys! Oh, and Kaydan," Luke starts looking at me.
"Yo?"
"Did you and Christian make up?"
I compress my blush. "Uh, is there a reason why you're asking my this now?"
"You have a visitor," he finishes pointing behind me.
I follow his gesture and see Christian standing at the front with his hands in his jacket pocket. He catches my stare and quickly looks away.
"Why is he here?"
"Okay guys, watch how me and Kaydan deal with this." Luke speeds past me and gets to Christian first. "How may we help you?"
Christian glares at him. "I want breakfast."
"Oh, I'm terribly sorry sir, you can't get in without a reservation."
"But you let me in yesterday."
"Everyone gets an entrance their first time," he says quickly.
I narrow my eyes at him. "I guess I'll reserve a spot then."
"Alright, when would you like to come back?"
"Come back? I want to eat now."
"Ooo, we're booked up until next week."
"Luke, leave him alone," I say stepping up to his side.
Christian's eyes soften as he looks at me.
"If he wanted in he should've reserved a spot like everyone el-"
"Here," Christian speaks up handing Luke around $300.
Luke stares at him in silence.
"Christian, that's way too much," I say looking at him. "It doesn't even cost money to reserve a spot."
"Then sign me up for a membership or something."
"We don't have memberships here."
"Then what should I-"
I sigh and grab his wrist, pulling him inside. "You see that girl with the blonde hair?" I ask him.
He nods.
"That's Sarah. She might be working the front sometimes. If she ever asks you for a name, just tell her you're with me, alright?"
"...Alright," he mumbles.
I walk him over to a table and sit him down. "You still want your-"
"Hey, hey, hey!" Luke interrupts me coming over. "The trainees are on duty today, remember?"
"Right, my bad." I turn back to Christian. "Those two over there are Jasp-"
"I don't care," he cuts me off. "I want to you to be my waiter."
"He can't," Luke answers for me. "He's suppose to be training his peers."
"I'm sorry, I forget the motto of most restaurants. What is it again?" Christian starts.
Luke looks at me puzzled.
"It involves the customer's rights or something."
Luke looks down and mutters something.
"What was that?" Christian pushes.
"The customer is always right!" He yells leaving. "Kaydan, hurry up so he can leave already!"
"Okay, okay!" I yell after him. "So your omelette?" I question.
"...I guess."
"Are you going to eat it this time?" "...Yes."
"Good. I'll be right back." As I turn to leave he reaches out and grabs my shirt. "You want water too?"
He shakes his head.
"Then what?"
"...I want you to stay and talk to me," he whispers without looking at me.
I bite my lip. When he wasn't being a smart ass, he was actually kind of adorable.
"Tell you ,what. I'll bring back your food, then I'll sit with you while you eat."
He lets go and leans back with his arms folded. "Only because you want to."
I narrow my eyes at him. "You little-"
"Omelette please."
I continue to the back and hand Megan the order. She walks into the back to prepare it. I look at David and he's grinning hugely.
"She's part chef, she's part chef!" "Congrats buddy." I glance over to Luke. "Why is he still here?"
"He needs to eat before he goes."
He rolls his eyes.
"Ding, ding!" Megan exclaims playfully handing me the meal. "Also, I was really confused, so I just put scrambled eggs inside of-"
"Perfect," I say taking the plate back to him. As I'm sitting down I see a family walk though the door and yell, "Sarah, Jasper, you're up!"
The quickly make their way to the front. "Hi," they say in unison.
I exhale relieved. They should have this under control.
"So what did you want to talk about?" I ask Christian as he eats a mouthful of eggs.
"...You're coming tonight, right?"
"Until I can cure you, yeah."
A small smile appears on his face.
"Hey, don't get any ideas. I'm just a pillow, remember that!"
"I won't do anything funny, I swear," he says eating more eggs. "Oh," he begins ruffling through his pockets, "here." He hands me his number.
"Actually I'll probably lose this...give me your phone."
He hands me his cellphone. "4451." "I'll forget it before the day ends." "I'll just tell you again," he shrugs.
I go into his contacts and save my number in his phone, then call myself. "There," I say handing him back his phone.
He is done with his eggs by now, and he takes back his phone. When I begin to stand up he asks, "Where are you going?"
"I need to watch my trainees."
"When do you get off of work?"
"Since it's a training day, I'll probably get off earlier, so around 10, 10:30?"
"Oh...Should I wait for you here?"
"No, you should go home."
"And do what?"
"What are you usually doing at 5 in the morning?"
"Sleeping."
"O-Oh...I'm sure you'll find something."
His slowly stands up and looks back at me. "So I'll see you at 10?"
I shrug. "Or 10:30."
He nods one solid nod, then heads out the door. He stands outside for a second, and looks through the window at me.
I sternly point to my side, basically yelling at him to go.
He turns in the direction I point and heads off.
I grin and I breathe through my nose.
I swear he went from indifferent cat to loyal dog in an instant...What am I gunna do with him?
"Kaydan, Kaydan," Jasper panics rushing over to me, pulling my attention away from Christian.
"What, what?" I reply looking up at him.
"I screwed up!"
I chuckle. "Highly doubtful!"
"I gave the two girls over there the wrong order, and they're thinking about leaving!"
I stare at him. "That's it?"
He nods furiously.
I sigh. "Hey Luke," I call, "Peaches at table two!"
"On it," he responds coming out from the back.
"Watch and learn."
"Ladies, ladies, what seams to be the problem?" Luke asks leaning over them.
Their eyes widen as they lose the ability to form words.
Luke laughs as he brushes his hand through his hair. "Would you like to order anything complimentary?"
"N-N-No! This is what I ordered!" One stammers.
"M-Me too! It's perfect," the other adds.
"Alright, if you ladies need anything, just ask," he finishes with a wink. He walks back over to us. "That's it?"
I punch his arm. "Show off."
He grins. "Anything to keep our rates up."
"You're lucky we mostly get girls and families, and not as much guys."
"Actually, Sarah is pretty good at Peaches, so I taught her how to work it a bit."
"...You're a monster."
"Together we're unstoppable," he turns to Sarah and winks.
She smiles and waves.
"Thank you Mr. Matthews," Jasper speaks up bowing.
"The name is Luke, and don't mention it. If you ever have a problem, yell peaches and the designated table."
Jasper flashes a small grin then returns to work, leaving Luke and I alone.
"So where's your little friend?" He asks
"Who? Christian? He should be at his house."
Luke just stares at me.
"What?"
"You guys are awfully buddy, buddy now, huh?"
I shrug saying, "I guess. He's not so bad when you actually talk to him."
"I see..." he begins. "...Did you spend the night at his place again?"
"I would've felt like a total butt if I didn't!" "Well since you did, and he should feel a lot
better now, you wanna come over?"
"I wish I could, but I can't."
"Kaydan!"
"I promised Christian I'd help him out! I do owe it to him!"
"That's ridiculous!"
"Call it what you will," I finish standing up. "I'm going to go wipe off tables. I can't stand coming into work to do nothing."
"Simon already cleaned all the tables!" He calls after me.
"Then I'll make sure they're clean!"
Once the last group of people leave Luke calls us all in. "Great work everyone! Do you guys have a feel for what you're suppose to be doing?"
"Yes sir!" Megan speaks for them.
"Awesome. On Saturdays we open late and close early, and on Sundays we're closed. Any questions?"
"No work tomorrow?" David asks.
"Nope."
"Sweet!" I exclaim rushing to the back. It was 8: 07, so I had time to spare. I show Jasper and Simon where to hang their aprons and watch them clock out. "I'll see you guys Monday!"
They wave as they leave together.
David helps Megan clean the last dishes and takes her apron and hat. "Thank you for your hard work!"
"Thanks for having me!" She replies gathering her stuff. "Sarah, are you ready?"
"Yeah," she response and she grabs her jacket.
David walks out of the kitchen and joins us all in the front, waving them off. "Today wasn't too bad," he chirps.
"I concur!" I sigh prepping to leave myself.
"Not so fast," Luke says, stopping us in our tracks.
"What now?" I groan.
"We need to count the money."
"Why didn't you teach Sarah your method?"
"David doesn't even know my method."
David nods, claiming it to be truth. "I'll see you guys later."
"How long will this take?" I whine.
"Not as long if we start now," he grins, cracking open the register.
Because Luke is so damn peculiar about how his money is counted, it usually takes hours. Lucky for me, there weren't as many customers today, so I didn't take as long.
We finished by 11:13.
"Why can't you count the money like normal people?"
Luke rolls his eyes at me holding open the door. "We've been over this. If I do that we won't have a sure way of knowing that I counted correctly without me having to count it again, then having you proof it by counting, then recounting!"
"But we end up recounting anyway!"
"Yes, but it's more efficient and organized."
"You mean redundant and unnecessary?"
"Don't mock the method, Kaydan."
"I'm not mocking it, I'm criticizing it," I finish with a smirk.
He gets into his car and closes the door not saying another word.
I wave at him, and he pretends not to see me. "Bye!"
After he pulls off, I haul ass. I make it to my apartment, then stop at the top floor.
I'll change first, then go talk to him.
I walk over to my apartment and unlock the door. As soon as I place my foot on the other side, Christian's door slams open. He grabs me by the back of the shirt and tugs me backwards out of my apartment. "I can explain!"
"You're late," is all he says as he picks me up and tosses me over his shoulder.
"I know, but-"
"No excuses." He closes my door and carries me through his, and up his stairs.
"Can I at least ch-"
"No." He trows me onto his bed and crashes on top of me.
"Christian, at least let me-"
"Good night," he grumbles kissing me behind the ear and falling asleep almost instantly.
"Christian!" I yell.
He doesn't respond.
"How the hell are you able to change so quickly?"
