Chapter 8

Author's POV

The viewers had taken a short break to catch up, eat, rest, etc, and were now finally ready to continue the viewing process as they sat down.

The screen flashed to life once again

A child's laughter was heard through the dark caves of burial mounds followed by another laughter this time from a young man.

"ah, A-Yuan! stay still or else you won't grow taller." the young man teased the child who was almost fully buried in the ground save for his head, the said child laughed once again when a young woman came into view and stood behind the young man menacingly.

"Wei Wuxian! how many times have I told you not to bury A-Yuan in the soil! you will wash his clothes since you dirtied them." she glared at the young man now recognized as Wei Wuxian.

"Ay-yah! Qing-jie if I won't bury A-Yuan in the soil then how will he grow taller?" Wei Wuxian laughed, the two went back and forth like that until they were interrupted by granny Wen who asked Wen Qing about the radishes.

After a small talk with granny, Wen Qing ordered Wei Wuxian to go buy radishes and make himself useful, but there was undeniable fondness in her tone which made Wei Wuxian smile as he promised her that he would bring radishes this time instead of potatoes.

Watching Wei Wuxian's retreating figure along with A-Yuan Wen Qing couldn't help but feel sadness in her heart for the boy who gave up so much, who was so kind to her and her family. Who was working non-stop to bring her brother back and yet he received nothing in return.

She knew his heart was heavy due to the fact his brother had visited him a couple of days ago.

Flashback

Wei Wuxian was seen in his cave with A-Yuan teaching the young boy how to write when suddenly he felt disturbance in the barriers so, he put the child down and rushed to see who was visiting.

He felt his heart stop when he saw his brother there, Wei Wuxian gave his brother a tour of the burial mounds which tore down any suspicions of an 'army of young cultivators' when instead there were only a bunch of old people and a child.

The Jiang sect leader tried to convince Wei Wuxian to leave the Wens and come back but the stubborn boy wouldn't budge.

Wei Wuxian knew that Lotus Pier was still weak from the previous attacks and the war so they couldn't risk anything, especially when the bastard Jin Guangshan held his hungry eyes on the Yummeng Jiang sect constantly asking for Wei Wuxian.

But...a part of him had hoped that his brother would protect him and the Wens, that he would stand by his side but alas,  he had no choice left so he told Jiang Cheng to tell the world that he had defected from the sect.

They had a duel the next day which ended up with Wei Wuxian breaking Jiang Cheng's non-dominant arm and the latter stabbing him in the stomach. The two brothers left with tears in their eyes and a broken relationship that day.

Flashback ends

Jiang Cheng looked at the screen, his eyes flashing with guilt and pain when he saw his brothers' broken expression, 'I was so weak! I couldn't even protect my own brother. I should have stood by him and kept my promise...I broke it first. Forgive me brother' he thought to himself while closing his eyes suppressing another wave of tears.
