Parent's Proposal

"Mom, Dad, Tita, and Tito. Andre and I... we're soon to be parents, with your grandchild..." I whispered.

Agad nanlaki ang mga mata ni Tita Aurora kasabay ng pag-ubo ni Tito Gerald. My mother's face stayed the same, emotionless and serious. Habang si Dad naman ay napaiwas ng tingin sa direksyon namin ni Andre. Tito Gerald took the white napkin on top of his lap as he dabbed it a bit on the side of his lips while clearing his throat.

"I-I would like to talk about this in a more private place, please," Tita Aurora said. "If it's okay with Imogen, as well as her parents, we can talk in our house," dagdag nito.

Napatingin naman ako kay Andre na seryoso ang mukha. He looked at me, waiting for my answer. "It's fine with us, Tita," I answered as I looked down on my lap.

"Gerald, let's go," aya ni Tita Aurora sa kaniyang asawa kasabay ng pagtayo nito. She grabbed her bag as she stepped away from her seat. "Excuse us," she whispered as she walked away from the table. Agad naman sumunod sa kaniya si Tito Gerald.

I let out a disappointed sigh as I pulled my hand away from Andre's grip. I looked at the direction of my mother and father. My father's eyes were so soft. He gave me a small smile as I looked next to my mother. She extended her arms and reached for the glass of water on the table. "I-I'm sorry..." bulong ko sa dalawa.

Unti-unti kong naramdaman ang pag-init ng gilid ng aking mga mata. Tumikhim si Mom dahilan para mapatingin ako rito. "I am not surprised, Amaia," seryosong banggit ni Mom.

Tuluyan nang tumulo ang mga nagbabadyang luha sa aking mga mata pababa sa aking pinsgi. "M-Mom..." I whispered as I tried to reach for her hands.

"I just want to make sure of one thing," singit nito. "Are you two in a relationship?" diretso nitong tanong.

Agad kumabog nang mabilis ang aking puso sa loob ng aking dibdib. I immediately shook my head to the side as an answer. "Imo..." rinig kong bulong sa akin ni Andre, as if he wanted to stop me from confessing the truth.

Binalewala ko ang pagtawag sa akin ni Andre at agad sinalubong ang malalamig na titig ng aking ina. "No, we're not," diretso kong sagot.

"Will you take responsibility for it?" tanong pa nito habang diretsong nakatingin kay Andre.

Agad lumipat ang aking tingin kay Andre. "I will, Maam," pormal nitong sagot.

"Then, that's all I need to hear," muling sagot ni Mom. Hinarap niya ako nang tuluyan at saka hinawakan nang mahigpit ang aking mga kamay na nakapatong sa kaniyang kamay kanina. "Don't cry, Amaia. It's alright," she said, comforting me.

Mas lalong lumakas ang pagbuhos ng mga luha mula sa aking mga mata kasabay ng sunod-sunod kong pagtango. "Don't cry," she repeated as her hand reached for my cheek, wiping the tears away. "We would like to clear things up to your parents too, Andre."

My parents decided to follow Andre's car going to their main house. I gave the keys of my car to my father. Napagdesisyunan naming sumabay na lamang ako kay Andre at susunod na lamang ang dalawa sa amin.

I shifted on the passenger's seat as I leaned my head on the head rest of the chair. "Why did you admit that we're not in a relationship, Imo?" naguguluhang tanong ni Andre. "I thought that we will tell them that we are a couple, for them to not question how I got you pregnant."

"I never said that I'll give that excuse to my parents, Andre. My... parents know. They know that I sleep around with different men and they couldn't care less about it. We can still pretend that we are in a relationship when it comes to your parents," sagot ko.
