"REEF!"

"Come up my dear."

"Congratulations Reef!"

"Glad I'm not her."

"Who's that?"

I was frozen, not knowing what the hell just happened. The rain pounded on top of my head as the words repeated over and over again in my brain but nothing changed. It was still the same thing, still the same meaning. It was me. I was the girl tribute. I was going into the Hunger Games. I was going to die in the Hunger Games. I know there was no color in my skin and I thought I was going to fall over and throw up, but I didn't. Instead, I turned to the side and walked down the path the girls made for me to the stairs. I walked slowly, still in shock after everything and I was still letting the information process through my head.

There were two peacekeepers there waiting for me, ready to lead me up to the stage where Tobias and Casimir waited for me at the microphone. But that's when I heard it, that's when I heard his shouts over everything else. I knew it was Kai, I could hear him struggling against the arms of two peacekeepers at the back, and he was screaming my name, begging that they let me go, begging that I look back, that I look at him. But I didn't. I couldn't. I knew that if I did then I'd cry and crying would make me look weak and strength was all I had going for me.

"REEF!" He screamed. "LET ME GO! REEF! REEF LOOK AT ME, GOD PLEASE LOOK AT ME!" He continued as I walked up the stairs slowly, one by one, Tobias offering a helping hand that I declined.

Once I was by his side, Casimir took one of my hands and I couldn't shake away from his tight grip as he lifted mine and Tobias's hands in the air in triumph. I felt the weight of these event slam down on me as the crowd was half silent, half alive and cheering. None of the adults were cheering and I could see Kai, screaming and screaming until he was pulled away.

"I give you your tributes for the 70th annual Hunger Games!" Casimir cheered and then looked at both of us, backing up so that no one could hear us through the mic. "The peacekeepers will escort you to a room where you will say your goodbyes to loved ones before we leave, understood?"

"Yes sir." Tobias said for me and I nodded, indicating that I understood.

"Very good." He said with a smile as I felt a harsh grip on my arm as a peacekeeper pulled my soaking body inside the building.

I paced back and forth, sometimes looking out the window to see the ocean but all I saw was the now completely empty square that was once filled with life. People had better things to do while I waited for Kai. I felt the walls closing in on me as the shock had now worn away and the heaviness of my situation came down on me like a falling bolder. I was going to die. I was seriously going to die. I wasn't ready to die, not yet!

Suddenly, a loud bang came from behind me and I turned to see Kai who didn't even take a second before he engulfed me in a huge hug. I thought he was going to be mad at me, I don't know why but that's what I thought. I couldn't have been more wrong.

"You've got five minutes." The soldier told us as he closed the door to give us some privacy.

I could feel Kai's sobs against my shoulder as he gripped me so tightly, as if letting me go meant falling into a dark abyss of nothing. When I felt the tears build in my eyes I quickly pulled him off of me and held his strong head in my shaking hands. We locked eyes and his were red from crying and I blinked my own tears away as I rubbed my thumb across his swollen cheek. I had never seen my brother this upset, not even when my parents died, and it shattered my heart into pieces.
