Chapter 31: Interrogation

      The plan was finally about to be set in motion. It was almost seven p.m. the time Kylie said they come every Tuesday. I was supposed to lie in bed and wait. Everyone was in there positions and I could faintly see Oceana in her black clothing on the ceiling, breathing. Island was under the bed. Rylie was in the cabinet, Kai was in an unscrewed air vent near the floor and Kylie and Isle were just outside the room. Now all we had to do was wait. It was 7:30 when Agua, Leviathan, and Ghost finally came swimming into my hospital room like it was nobody's business. I just lied there and waited my breathing getting heavy. What if Agua found out I knew? What if he knew what we were doing?
    A sharp and strong smell invaded my nose. Cologne. I could hear the currents outside. I could see through the tiny slits in my eyes that they were slowly swimming toward me. Then when Agua came super close there was a whisper," She's cute. Are you sure we have to kill her?" I was about to yell a smart comment but bit the inside of my lip instead. I wasn't going to risk this plan and waste my breath. " Leviathan, shut up. I'm trying to focus." I turned over the other way so the temptation to open my eyes and beat them up would lessen. Agua groaned and swam over to the other side. I sighed then rolled over onto my back. That was Rylie's sign. After a second I heard another whisper," Where'd Leviathan go?" I almost laughed because I knew Rylie had dragged him inside the cabinet with her. She had used a drug that would make Leviathan feel really woozy. She dumped two whole bottles of it on a cloth when I had told her that a few squirts would be enough. When I turned over she knew to slowly get out and put it over his mouth. She was surprisingly quiet. Next was Oceana. I turned over again but on my stomach my head turned the other way again." Something's not right here, Leviathan didn't just . . . Ghost? Ghost?" Yes! It had already happened, Oceana was supposed to come down and do this weird thing where she could pinch someone specifically on their neck and they would pass out from a sensitive nerve or something like that. She was supposed to take him before he fell and made a sound. Then she would have held him up on the ceiling. There was a net on the ceiling that he was supposed to rest on. Last one left, Agua. That's was Islands job. Agua yelped and started fighting back. Uh-oh, that wasn't part of the plan. I got up and hit him in the neck. In karate, my teacher had taught me where weak spots on people's shoulders were just in case you wanted to make someone's aura dampen so they wouldn't know what to do for a moment or two. She was a very spiritual person. Fortunately Agua stopped fighting and turned around in enough time for Island to hit him upside his head with a big medicine bottle. He fell forward onto me and Kai quickly swam out of the vent and took him. I sighed with relief and happiness. Island opened the door and Kylie and Isle swam in. " Now Oceana, get the ropes, Isle pull up the chairs and turn on the lights. It's time to interrogate." I sat on the bed and Kai sat down next to me and we both stared until they eventually woke up at 8:30. I think Leviathan would've slept longer if I hadn't let him take a whiff of a dirty towel that Kai had found in the cabinet. They all had their turn to groan and blink the sleep out of their eyes and when Leviathan saw me he gave me a charming smile, I rolled my eyes and ignored him. "Hey, princess." I looked at Leviathan he was smiling at me again. I moaned and he chuckled,"Playing hard to get, I like that." I turned to him actually mad now,"Do you mind, please." It wasn't a question, more of an order. He winked and then shut up. Ghost was just staring at me, like he was waiting for us to look away to escape. Agua was looking pretty disappointed and he glared out the window but stealing glances at Kylie. I subtly looked between the two of them. What did Kylie do? " First question, what were you doing with this?" I pulled out the syringe with the purple stuff inside." Don't tell me now and I'll get the truth serum and ask you unnecessary questions." We didn't have a truth serum. Agua glanced at Kylie again. Then he eventually said," It's a food poisoning, except you don't need to put it in food." I tilted my head confused," So you mean it's poison. You literally could've just said that." I turned to Kai who had his phone with LIST written at the top." Kai number 1 is food poisoning for themselves but not the death kind." This was the list for after I announced I'm the lost princess. Kai nodded. I put down the syringe while Kylie asked her question." Second question, why did you act so nice around Zayana if you wanted the throne?" He shook his head while smiling," What, you guys never heard the saying keep your friends close and your enemies closer?" I closed my eyes. So disgusted by myself. I let this happen. I was the worst princess ever! Then Rylie asked her question, I was going to be so annoyed if she asked the other question-"Are you single?" Everyone looked at Rylie with confused looks she blushed probably just realizing what she thought inside her head aloud. " I am," Leviathan said grinning at me," But if you don't mind, I'm saving that label for someone else." He winked at me again. I gagged. Kylie interjected," What Rylie meant to say was what were you planning to do?" Leviathan talked this time, directing his answer towards me. What a surprise. " Agua was planning to kill you. I didn't want to. Just want to clarify that." He eyed everyone to make sure they understood before continuing," Agua would take the crown and we would be the best guards ever." Agua leaned toward me," Zayana, listen. You can leave them, if you come with me and let us go we could rule together." I turned to Kai who was looking down and I did too when I answered," No. I'm taking my place as queen and I'm going to serve my people while making sure merpeople like you stay out of it." Agua scoffed, and everyone else gasped, I forgot I hadn't told everybody." You won't know what to do and you can't rule yourself!" He yelled at me while I exited the room. I heard Kai scolding him, when the door opened Kai swam out," Hey, hey, what's wrong." My eyes started to tear up and I fell into a chair resting my head in my hands," Kai, what if he's right? what if I can't rule by myself and-" Kai shushed me," It's okay, it's okay. Your going to be a great friend and queen to everyone here," he pulled my chin up and smiled," I know you will be. You're already taking charge like that now. You didn't see how everyone fell into line when you told them the plan? That's real queen ruling. But I promise you, the few times that you will need help there's some right here if you ever need it." I smiled," Thanks, Kai." Kai made me think of him as the big brother I never had. When we heard a shout we swam blindingly fast into the room. Island was lying on the ground with Atlantic by his side. Oceana was staring out the broken window. Shattered. How did that happen?" What happened here?" I asked, but I started putting the pieces together when I saw the knife on the ground." Agua had a knife and he cut the rope then knocked Island out with the medicine bottle. I'm sorry, we didn't know," I was so angry. We had Agua and his friends! " I thought I said take whatever they have, when you first got-" I stopped short and stared at the faint red flashing under the bed," What?" I heard Kai ask. I swim over and yelled at everyone," Everyone, shush!" I crawled under and looked at it. A hearing device most likely. Rylie started talking again and I sighed grabbed the soft pillow and threw it at her. She stared at me like I threw a rock. I turned around and put my finger to my lips. I picked off the flashing button and looked at it. I pressed the button and the flashing stopped. I swam outside of the room and pinned it on the table outside the room. " Now talk." Kai looked at me I smiled and shrugged he swam closer to me. And everyone else started talking again. I had him.
