Chapter 48: It's A Fridge

      I panted and finally caught my breath. I looked at Agua and saw Rylie, Kylie, and Kai on the couch. I hadn't realized until now how Kai and Rylie looked a bit different as Agua had too. Kai had blonde hair and blue eyes and Rylie had a gradient of brown to pink hair and light brown eyes. I didn't mention it though, didn't want to freak Rylie out.
I went up to my room and grabbed some shorts and a t-shirt. I walked into the laundry downstairs and grabbed a basket for the clothes. I searched Michael's temporary room when he visited and grabbed some clothes that would hopefully fit Agua and Kai, from Michael's closet. Vlad seemed too skinny to wear Michael's clothes so I grabbed some of mine. Long loose pants and a big t-shirt. Then I grabbed some clothes for Rylie and Kylie. I came downstairs with the basket holding all the clothes. I gave everyone their clothes and told them their was a bathroom upstairs and downstairs. Rylie changed and I stood nearby and watched to see if Kylie tried any funny business since we had to untie her. She stared the whole time while she was changing. After I tied her back up and we all sat down on the couch, I realized I was ridiculously exhausted. None of us spoke a word for about an hour while we lied there. When I felt my eyelids drooping, I went upstairs and got sleeping bags and pillows and extra blankets. I was gonna let Rylie sleep on my chair in the air. Like it was a literal chair that was meant to be in the air hung by cords. It had soft purple cushions with squishy pillows. Sometimes I slept up there but usually I just read, drew, or did my homework up there. Then I went back downstairs to put a long piece of wax paper on the door and taped it down. It wasn't a lot but it would make sure nothing blew in or animals didn't crawl in. I told everyone to come upstairs and everyone picked their spots. We all sat down and watched a few movies on my tv. I fell asleep after the first few minutes of the third one. When I woke up, I saw everyone sleeping. Rylie, especially must have had a good sleep because she was snoring as an elephant would. I yawned and stretched. I had woken up surprisingly early for being so tired. Then I sat up and smiled, I hadn't had a sleep that well for weeks. I lied there for an hour more then got up, quietly. I tiptoed to my door but heard Kai. Zayana? I turned back toward Kai. I forgot he could speak through my mind. Yes? Is there food? Of course. I walked downstairs and got strawberries, apples, oranges, and bananas, I cut up the fruit put it in a plate and brought it up to Kai, he was sitting up. Is there anything else you need? He shook his head. I went back downstairs and got everyone else's fruit ready but put it in the fridge so it would stay fresh. I sat down on the couch. Where would Auntie A be? I know Agua was here and even though he had shared his story with me, he could've been telling the truth but he might've also just done it for my trust so he could trick me again. I needed to be careful. And anyways it was good for my brain to think about super complex problems like one such as this. I thought for a long time, so long that Agua walked down the stairs while I was still thinking about it. I was fidgeting with my fingers once again when he sat down on the couch next to me. I looked up startled," Oh, morning." " Morning, whatch'ya thinking about?" He asked. I opened my mouth to lie but then I remembered what he said about me never trusting him. I had to show him I did. "I was thinking of where my Auntie A could be, do you know?" He looked at me shocked,"You want me . . . to help you?" "Yes, because I trust that you won't go behind my back and tell your dad our plan to stop us and then backstab me and everybody hates you." He smiled then realized I wasn't joking and frowned,"Wow," he said. I laughed softly. "You actually trust me though?" He asked, I smiled then nodded,"Of course I do. I trust you to be there for me when I need you, when we go and fight your dad." I stuck my pinkie finger out. Agua stared at it and frowned,"This is childish. A pinkie promise?" "When a girl asks you to do a pinkie promise you know the situation is serious. Promise me with your daggone pinkie." He shook his head still convinced this was stupid but his pinkie wrapped around mine and I grinned. "My dad won't expect me to be on your side but he does know that I'm captured." "I'm sorry, what?" Agua pointed at the opposite ear that had the scar from his brother. Behind it was a small gray metal thing with a red button in the middle spreading out with red veiny looking things. "He checks in every night to see how it's going." An idea popped in my head,"I know I say this a lot but I have an idea." I said,"We trick your dad, you need to go back to your dad, so you escape. But we get Vlad to reverse the monitor to where we can hear you and we can talk to you. It's genius, someone on the inside. And then we'll know what's happening. We'll find my aunt." I turned towards Agua," What do you think?" Agua shook his head," I have a better idea. My dad said that he was going to take your aunt to the cave the next time it pops up. He's been tracking it for years and he knows when it's coming again. In seven days on the full moon." My eyes brightened, the day Theos had said! " If we're there first we can corner him. And you can do whatever you want to him and I can be with my brother. It's a win-win." I shook my head," No, it's not. How do we know my aunt will be there, we need someone on the inside. We need you. Let's just do my idea," Agua shook his head," My idea's better." " No it's not," " Yes, it is." " No it's not," " Yes, it is." " Why don't you want to go undercover, I'd love to do that job." " Because my dad can see behind the lies. He . . . well, it's just weird. One time when me and my brother were younger we snuck a few cookies and when my dad went to get himself some cookies, he noticed some missing and then asked us if we had cookies without permission. We both said no, and he still spanked us. He knew, he can see past the eyes to the soul." I stared blankly at Agua," Well, that's weird, um, but it's okay, I know how to get past a lie detector and technically that's the same thing as lying to someone's face. I can teach you, all you have to do is keep your heartbeat steady and you're fine. Put your wrist out," Agua put his wrist out and I put my thumb on his pulse I counted the pulses and found a beat." Say an obvious lie," " I'm 19," I felt his pulse quicken," Your pulse is going too fast, you have to keep it steady, tell another lie," I said. Agua searched my eyes,"I want to learn to trust people the way you do." His pulse remained the same, mine however had risen. Significantly. I stared into his eyes and his hand in mine suddenly felt too hot. I dropped it immediately and stood up. "Did I do something?" Agua asked behind me. I told him to tell a lie and he didn't! Besides, I didn't see the fact that I trusted people so easily was a blessing, nor something to wish on. "No, nothing. Nothing," I replied. "Can we practice again?" I nodded,"Yeah, yeah." I told him again and again to tell a lie but his pulse wouldn't stay still. "You know what, let's try something else. If you can't lie, then drag out the truth." "I don't get what you mean," he said. "Stretch the truth, like if I stole a cookie from the cookie jar then I would say no I didn't steal anything, it's not stealing if you didn't take it and kept it, you ate it and pooped it," I explained. "But you did take something." I glared at Agua," Okay maybe I should've come up with a better example but you get the point. Just stretch the truth, you're not lying. Think about it like that." I felt his pulse and hoped this strategy worked. I thought that maybe if this worked then I could get Vlad to make sure that we could see Agua's pulse through his metal thing. For when we did my plan instead of his. Agua breathed in slowly," Stretch the truth. Okay, um, I did trick Zayana and I earned her trust," his pulse felt the same. I gasped and smiled," Yes! You did it! Your pulse is normal! And also that was a really specific stretched out truth but ok!" As I said this Rylie walked down the stairs," What are you guys doing?" She asked," Trying to teach Agua to lie," I said simply. Rylie stopped rubbing her eyes and walked to the kitchen," Where's the food?" She asked," In the fridge." I said," What's that, and are you guys holding hands?" I ignored the second question but got up and walked to the fridge," This." " That's a . . . fridge?" She asked," Yes, and it stores food inside of it to keep it fresh. Some foods need to stay cool to stay good." Rylie looked blank," Sorry, is this too information for you at one time?" Rylie nodded and I groaned," That was a rhetorical question," I whispered. " A ready to call what?" She asked, I stared at Rylie. How would she have made it through school? " Never mind, that's a fridge and it opens. Food is inside." Rylie looked at the fridge and tried to open it from the middle then from the opposite side of where the handle was. I smacked my forehead, I should've been more specific. " You open it right here," I said. Rylie looked at that side," I tried that side," " No, you didn't!" Rylie looked uncertain," Are you sure?" " Yes!" I shouted," You tried that side!" I said pointing at the other side. " Uh huh," Rylie answered suspiciously. I rolled my eyes and pulled on the handle and Rylie gasped," I thought that was decoration!" She said, this time I stared blankly. At the handle then at Rylie," The-the-the-handle was right-you know what, I don't care anymore." I put my hands up in the air surrendering and walked back to the couch. I tried a few more stretched out truths with Agua until I was certain he would be able to lie - I mean stretch the truth, to his dad. Agua was ready so who was next?
