Ellie Richards

Uncle James was particularly quiet when I asked him what Chancellor Thorn has to do with our family, but I could tell from Grandmother's words she was both infuriated by his presence. I knew that Ma was an extremely strong woman who wouldn't back down. I just couldn't work out what he had to with our family. The moment I revealed my identity to the Chancellor I could tell that he had it out for me.

"Ellie. This is not the time to talk about this." Uncle James responded.

"Well if now is not the right time, when is? If I'm going to face that sexist man the least you could do is give me the information up front so I can protect myself!" I exclaimed as I pushed my hands on my hips.

"Ellie, sometimes the less you know, the safer you are." He huffed out. I could see from the corner of my eye that Clara was head shifted between the two of us.

"James, you can't be that naive? Honestly, isn't better for me know what I am up against? The only people that seem to be in my way is Thomas and the Chancellor. The previous Alpha and Luna do not seem to blame me for what has happened. Uncle, Ma is not only your family, but mine. If he has a vendetta or a score to settle, the least you could do is allow me the chance to defend myself. Don't send me in with a pistol filled with blanks." I reasoned. James looked at Clara with a pleading look, I could see he was trying to get her to help or support him but she seemed just as determined as me to get to the truth.

"Ergh, fine!" He said as he pinched the bridge of his nose. "Chancellor Thorn was your Grandmother's Alpha's son when she was in a pack." He sighed as he looked to the sky. "Thorn was obsessed with your Grandmother, she was the only daughter of the Beta. She was intelligent, witty and beautiful. The fact that she came from a strong bloodline of wolves who were powerful only heightened his obsession. He wanted your grandmother as his mate because of that reason."

"When they reached the age of finding their mates, Thorn was pissed because his mate was not your Grandmother but she was an Omega. He thought it was some joke and denied that the Omega was his mate. He tried to claim your Grandmother as his, but he failed. For she refused to be with someone that wasn't her mate. When your grandmother attended school she realised her mate was human. Our grandfather. She didn't care and proceeded to engage in a relationship with him. Her parents were too caught up in the Alpha family that they tried to force them to be together, but she refused. Thorn told the pack that mating with humans was against their nature. This made it extremely difficult for our grandparents to remain in the pack."

Uncle James hesitated momentarily. "I don't know the specifics, but there was an incident which led to Grandparents leaving and that is when they settled in Florida, miles away from the pack. They started their family and the rest is history. From what I heard, Thorn never mated with the Omega but instead choose the Gamma's daughter to be the Luna of the pack."

"God what is it with Alpha's and their Gamma's daughter's?" I muttered as I shook my head. "So you are saying that the Chancellor has a bone to pick with our family because Ma rejected him?" I sigh while rubbing my temples.

"By the looks of it yes. Whether you were born from a human or werewolf, our bloodline is strong. Chancellor won't want you to get away from the Alpha, but he hates us enough for us to brunt the responsibility of what has happened. He will find a way to blame you. Whether it was because you didn't fight for your mate or report it to the council. Thorn is old school and he will view you as the issue. The fact that you are choosing to spend your life with a human, only adds to his irritation. He sees it as beneath our evolution for you to willingly choose to be with a human." James replied.

"What an ignorant fool! Does he not realise that we are part human too?" I shook my head in disgust.

"I get it Ellie, but he has a lot more influence and power than you do. He holds more power than the retired Luna and Alpha. His word will be law, no matter what you say or do." James responded in defeat.

My heart stopped and I could hear my wolf growling in the back of my mind. She didn't like that she was being challenged and forced into something. For my wolf was extremely strong willed and determined. We shared similar beliefs, at the start she loved the idea of having a mate, but soon that was all it was. An idea. She believed that we deserved better and she hated that there was string that attached our souls together. She was truly independent and didn't believe that the sole reason for our happiness should rely on a male, especially one that was quick to dismiss us like a piece of trash.

"So what you are basically saying is that he can force us into a relationship? Into a mating?" I huff out.

"Yes, Ellie he can force you to be together." James muttered quietly.

That was it, my wolf erupted in the back of mind, she was snarling and growling with contempt. I could feel her anger brim to the surface, it was like a ripple of pain and hatred was channeling through my body. I could hear her voice clearly in the back of my mind as she protested. She expressed that she would rather be dead than be with someone who was so worthless and stupid. I couldn't help but clench my fists as I reacted to her overwhelming emotions.

"Ellie, your eyes there shifting, are you alright?" James worryingly asked. Clara was quick by my side at his words and she was stroking my back up and down making soothing sounds. I couldn't help but flinch because my wolf was on edge.

"I can tell you now, that if he thinks he can force my wolf to mate with that imbecile then he has another thing coming. My wolf detests him and there is no way she will let me mark him. Let alone have a physical relationship with Thomas." My voice was deep and husky as the words escaped my lips.

"Ellie." James pleaded.

"Don't James. It's not as straight forward as you think it is. I know my wolf and I know she will not relent. He may be our mate, but let us be clear it is only in namesake. Thomas has never acted like a mate, he rejected me before even getting to know me. I was a child when you told me I would have a mate. I made an active decision to stay away from romantic entanglements because I would break more than one heart if I got too close to someone. Thomas is an Alpha, he was raised by two good people, he was arrogant and thought he was above our beliefs, he should have known better."

James was silent where as Clara gave me a big smile. "She's right James. The suffering of this pack is not her responsibility. Alpha Thomas made that decision, he made it carelessly without thinking about those he swore to protect. How many times do the rejected have to be responsible for the misgivings of those who rejected us? Why is it Ellie's responsibility to make things right? I'm sorry but this is backwards and I know I am not the only one who feels and thinks this way. She shouldn't have to sacrifice her own happiness for someone who thought she was beneath him. I know this pack hasn't done anything wrong, but tell me there are not other Alpha children that could take over this pack?" Clara questioned.

"Clara, you need to watch what you say, you know it's treason!" James shouted through a whisper.

"So what! Isn't it treason for an Alpha to reject his true Luna? Why are you and everyone else ignoring his sins!" She retorted.

"Clar-" James began to say but his lips quickly pursed together. I could see his eyes darken and as I looked to Clara, she too was doing the same. James eyes soon returned to their usual colour. He let out a sigh. "Come on, we need to go."

Clara nodded at James and linked her arm through my arms. "The council has made a decision and the Chancellor has requested everyone return to the main hall." I exhaled a deep breath and gave them both a curt nod, as I followed James back to the pack hall where a decision would be made on my future.

All I could do was think about Seth. Not eyes closed as both me and my wolf begged the goddess to let us return to the person who loved us when we lost hope.
