I sat behind the counter and watched the music performance on television as I waited for my agonisingly long shift to come to an end. The usually busy shop had been slow today and I just wanted to get home to Jisung. I had barely seen him for weeks and I knew he was missing me.
Then there was the whole Hyunjin and Felix thing. The atmosphere in the apartment was unbearable at the moment and Felix had already told us he was planning on staying with Chris and Jeongin for a few weeks. Just until he had cleared his head, and decided what he wanted for himself.
Hyunjin was like a puppy who had been kicked one too many times. He was devastated and would lash out over the smallest things.
Not that I blamed him. His soul was broken by all of this and I knew it would take him a very long time to get over what he had shared with Felix.
I let out a loud sigh, and the bell dinged loudly as someone entered the store, drawing me out of my thoughts. Five minutes to go. I couldn't see the stranger clearly over the high shelves as they began wandering around, whistling slightly as they browsed the shelves for whatever it was they wanted.
"Good Evening." I called out to them in my friendly customer service voice. They didn't respond and I looked around awkwardly. As I waited for them to emerge from the shelves. The whistling had stopped and the sound of bags crinkling made me uneasy in the heavy awkward silence of the room.
"Yah Leeknow. Your shift is over. I'll take over if you want?" My boss' sweet voice came drifting into my ears. I stood up and began removing my apron that was tied tightly around me. I stretched my arms and smiled brightly at the ancient man who stood before me. His gap toothed grin was a pleasant change.
"Thank you Mr Min. I'll see you tomorrow." I bowed respectfully as I began gathering my things from behind the counter. My bag was on the floor and I leaned down to grab it as I stepped forward to leave. Thank God I could get home now. I stepped out from behind the counter without looking and face planted into someone, who was tall, and very muscular. The familiar smell of their cologne invaded my nose and I stepped backwards as I apologised profusely for my mistake.
"That's alright my boy." His voice drifted into my ears. I straightened up, fearing the face I was about to see. It couldn't be. There was no way.
There he was.
My estranged father in all of his glory, holding a basket and smirking down at me. He had found us again. I gulped and couldn't tear my eyes away from him as my body began trembling, and my feet suddenly glued to the spot. He looked the same as ever, except for the hint of excitement in his eyes.
"Leeknow, stop gawping and get home. I'll see you tomorrow!" Mr Min snapped at me as he began ushering me away from the spot. My feet moved slowly but I couldn't take my eyes off of him, as I began exiting my usually safe place of work.
It wasn't safe anymore.
How did he know where I worked? Why was he here?
"I'll walk you home if you want, son." He offered as I slowly backed away. I shook my head vigorously and before he could say another word, I charged out of the door and began running as fast as I could. My heart was pounding so hard I thought it would explode out of my chest. Heavy tears leaked from my eyes and I was praying this was a coincidence.
Why would he want to track us down? Hadn't we been through enough?
Hyunjin and Felix were over. Because of him. Jisung and Felix had lost both of their parents. Because of him. Hyunjin and I were still suffering. Because of him.
The apartment wasn't far from where I worked, and if he decided to pursue me, he would find us easily. I glanced behind me, but I couldn't even tell if he was following as tears blurred my vision heavily and my shaking made it seem like an earthquake was happening.
I pounded on the door hard as I whimpered and tried desperately to get someone to let me in. I was so close to safety. Just the thought of him even knowing what town we were in caused me enough panic to want to run as far away as possible.
"Jesus fucking Christ. I'm trying to sleep!" I fell through the door as Hyunjin opened it and began crawling desperately inside, as my legs and arms caved beneath me. All of my strength and power that I had reclaimed had been stolen once more.
"C-Close the door!" I begged as I gasped for air and desperately dragged my body away from the open space. Just knowing he could appear at any second was sending me into a frenzy. Jin slammed it and leaned against it, searching my face for the source of my terror.
"Min?" Jisung's hand fell on my shoulder and I grabbed his wrist tightly and stared up at him. "Why are you crying?" He asked as he reached down to touch my face. I pulled away and forced my body back against the wall. Horrified that they were all at risk again. This could not be happening.
"I-I. He was there." I couldn't even find the words. My brain was racing through a million thoughts as I analysed every worst case scenario of seeing that man again, and wondered how much he actually knew about our lives. We had been so careful about everything and didn't even let our friends into the apartment. No one except us knew where we lived. At least that's what I had thought.
That was when I realised. This was not over.
"Is everything OK?" Felix appeared behind Jisung and leaned casually against the door frame, looking half dead, with puffy bright red eyes. The evidence of my father's misdeeds were scribbled painfully over the four of us, and he would never let us find peace.
"We have to leave. We have to move. Start packing. We're not safe." I got to my feet and rushed into the lounge as I began frantically pacing, deciding what to do first, and where we would go. Nowhere was far enough away. I was ready to abandon everything to protect them and I didn't care the cost, or toll, it would take on me.
His comforting arms snaked around me and he pulled me close to him, trying to calm my anxious soul, as he squeezed me close to him in a sweet, warm, loving embrace.
"Min, calm down. Tell us what happened." He soothed as he gently caressed my back. My arms dropped to my side and my head fell Jisung's shoulder gently. I was too tired and panicked to even try and pretend I wasn't shaken up. I tried to swallow the stony lump in my throat but it was no use.
"He came into the shop. He knows where I work. I-I panicked and ran. He's found us."
We all stood under the weight of those words, and no one spoke.
"I've got to go." Jin's voice was a low growl, and we all tried to stop him. He had picked up his keys, and walked out of the door so quickly none of us could react in time.
Now we had no choice but to go back.
We had to save Hyunjin.
