"Oh."
-

"It was him." Steve spoke up, all of them cuffed in the back of a van. "He looked right at me like he didn't even know me."

"How did that even possible? It was, like, 70 years ago." Sam said.

"Zola." Steve muttered, looking down. "Bucky's whole unit was captured in '43. Zola experimented on him. Whatever he did helped Bucky survive the fall. They must have found him and..."

"None of that's your fault, Steve." Natasha consoled.

"Even when I had nothing, I had Bucky." Steve mumbled.

"We need to get a doctor here." Sam chimed in, glancing at Natasha's arm and Alina was doing the same. "If we don't put pressure on that wound, she's gonna bleed out here in the truck."

The guard flashed their baton at Sam and he jolted back away from it. They then flipped it into the guard beside them, kicking them a cross the face and they slumped on the floor. The guard pulled their helmet off to reveal that it was Maria who exhaled, "Ah. That thing was squeezing my brain. Who is this guy?"

-

Steve pushed open the van door, helping Natasha out of it, Alina getting out next, her hand pressed to the wound on her arm, Sam getting out after her. They were then led into a cave by Maria.

"GSW. She's lost at least a pint." Maria called to the doctor that came running down the hallway.

"Maybe two." Sam chimed in.

"Let me take her." The doctor ordered, gesturing a hand.

"She'll want to see him first." Maria denied.

They walked further and Maria pulled back a curtain to reveal Fury lying on a hospital bed, bruised and cut. The Director stared at them, "About damn time."

"Oh." Alina mused before nodding and moving to grab the things to clean and stitch up her wound, the doctor moving to patch Natasha up.

"Lacerated spinal column, cracked sternum, shattered collarbone, perforated liver, and one hell of a headache." Fury listed the injuries he had received from both attacks given by the Winter Soldier.

"Don't forget your collapsed lung." The doctor spoke up.

"Let's not forget that." Fury muttered. "Otherwise, I'm good."

"They cut you open. Your heart stopped." Natasha stated.

"Tetrodotoxin B. Slows the pulse to one beat a minute. Banner developed it for stress. Didn't work so great for him, but we found a use for it." Fury explained.

"Why all the secrecy? Why not just tell us?" Steve asked.

"Any attempt on the Director's life had to look successful." Maria said.

"Can't kill you if you're already dead." Fury hummed. "Besides, I wasn't sure who to trust." Natasha glanced down at that, slightly hurt.

-

"This man declined the Nobel Peace Prize." Fury started, looking down at a black and white photo of Pierce. "He said peace wasn't an achievement, it was a responsibility. See, it's stuff like this that gives me trust issues."

"We have to stop the launch." Natasha stated.

"ни хрена." Alina mumbled. (No shit)

"I don't think the Council's accepting my calls anymore." Fury said before lifting the lid of a case to reveal three chips.

"What's that?" Sam questioned.

"Once the helicarriers reach 3,000 feet, they'll triangulate with Insight satellites, becoming fully weaponised." Maria explained.

"We need to breach those carriers and replace their targeting blades with our own." Fury added.

"One or two won't cut it. We need to link all three carriers for this to work because if even one of those ships remains operational, a whole lot of people are gonna die." Maria continued.

"We have to assume everyone aboard those carriers is HYDRA." Fury said. "We have to get past them, insert these server blades. And maybe, just maybe, we can salvage what's left."

"We're not salvaging anything." Steve snapped. "We're not just taking down the carriers, Nick. We're taking down S.H.I.E.L.D."

"S.H.I.E.L.D. had nothing to do with this." Fury denied.

"You gave me this mission. This is how it ends. S.H.I.E.L.D.'s been compromised. You said so yourself. HYDRA grew right under your nose and nobody noticed." Steve said, angered.

"Why do you think we're meeting in this cave? I noticed." Fury argued.

"How many payed the price before you did?" Steve shot back.

"Look, I didn't know about Barnes." Fury sighed.

"Even if you did, would you have told me? Or would you have compartmentalised that, too?" Steve asked. "S.H.I.E.L.D., HYDRA, it all goes."

"He's right." Maria nodded.

Fury looked to Natasha who leant back in her seat, silently agreeing with Steve. He then look to Sam who shook his head lightly, "Don't look at me. I do what he does, just slower."

"Why are you looking at me? My answer is obvious." Alina shrugged when Fury looked to her.

"Well..." Fury trailed off, shaking his head and leaning back in his seat. "It looks like you're giving the orders now, Captain."
