It's been so long since I have dared to dream,

Many years by now, sleep simply skipped time,

But when we first met, I swam in night's stream,

With joy, awaiting a morning sublime;

Then that one day, I learned of your other;

The sun and moon became my enemies,

Since by the day you were with another,

And by the night, sleep came with penalties:

When I nap, I see you in my slumber;

Flowing in my mind's waters, joints soon rust,

I wake from drowning, as if by thunder;

Now in rest, dream's sweet stream dries up to dust:

The nightmares start not when head hits pillow,

They haunt me when sunlight hits my window.
