I'm sure you know why I acted aloof,

That after one day, I sought some distance;

You had your inklings, but no solid proof,

Of my love, my persistent insistence:

At first, it seemed that I had shied away,

To trudge back to my corner all alone,

Like a starved lion, who had lost his prey,

To make peace with death, paying back life's loan:

But after a week of selfish mourning,

I realized if my love really be true,

Then my heartache was a prideful warning,

Since I should desire what's best for you:
