Life with Buddy

The ages change throughout. Just know, finn is 2 years older than Rose

Rose pov

Age 4

They were gone. Tommy, Arthur, John. My brothers, left me and I'm not sure why. It's been a month since they left and i still can't get my head around it. Aunt pol told me it was because there was a war that needed fighting. I just don't understand why we are at war. Wouldn't it be easier for all the rulers to sit down and have a Teddy bear tea party. That's what me and Amy did when we had an argument. The teacher made us go round one another house and have a tea party. It worked. I don't want to punch her now

Because I've been so upset and missing my brothers, aunt pol has promised me and finn that we could get a puppy. Finn is excited but not as excited as me. He says it will be cool and cute but he isn't that fussed about dogs. Says they smell. But I am really really really, super duper, triple, excited! And I know just the dog I want

We got to the pet shop and I immediately began jumping up and down with joy as I saw my dog. I had my eye on it for quite so time. He was there when I would walk past with Arthur. Although he did try to buy it once. Aunt pol made him send it back. But now we are allowed one!

Age 8

They were home! Finally, my brothers were home and they were safe. Aunt pol said buddy (my dog) wouldn't be allowed in the station and he might get scared of all the people. So I had to leave him behind. I reunited with my brothers and it was amazing. They said I had grown although I didn't feel like it. With an overwhelming surge of joy, we got home. They seemed amazed by how much had changed and yet stayed the same in our street. I ran to the door because I hated leaving buddy by himself for too long. My brothers followed after me

"Fucking hell. Since when do we own a bear?" Arthur asked as he saw buddy standing next to me, growling at my brothers. He didn't really like people. Men especially since he isn't used to them

"This is buddy. Roses protector" polly says

"Careful. He don't even let me pinch her food" finn grumbled as I laughed

Age 10

Me and buddy were walking to school together. He normally waits for me outside the gate and then we walk back together as well. But I hang out with him at break and lunch. As we kept walking, I noticed these men following me. 2 of them.

To make sure I wasn't going crazy, i took many different twist and turns, only for them to follow to the point we had walked in a full circle. I was beginning to panick. Buddy sensed it because he got very close to me and let out a low growl. The men started to speed up as did I but eventually, one grabbed my shoulder.

With a scream, I flinched away from him and got behind buddy. He pricked his ears up and snarled at the men. Before going and biting one on the leg. He then bit the others arm as they left crying and hobbling away. I was in abit of shock so I grabbed onto his collar and he led me home where polly made sure I was alright

Age 12

"Rose anne shelby! Get down these stairs right now" I groaned as i jumped of the bed, buddy following me. I knew what this was about. I walked down stairs to be met with Tommy's very angry face

"What is this?" He asked holding up a letter from the school

"Paper" I replied shrugging

"Don't be a smart arse" I realised I wasn't going to win this

"Ugh fine. It's a letter from the school telling you I haven't been in months. I know. And I'm sorry. But you have to understand, look what happens when I leave" I walked out of the door and then heard buddy's howling. So I walked back in making him stop

"That dog has attachment issues" he muttered before storming off.

Age 14

"Erm finn. Somethings not right with buddy" I said to my brother as I looked at buddy. I had given him some bacon but he just looked at it before walking back to his bed slowly. He hadn't ate any of his food so I was giving him his favourite, but he just didn't want it. I reached down to stroke him but he let out a cry once I got to a part of his back. I quickly backed away with pain in my eyes

"Go get tommy" I ordered finn. Then I went back and stroked buddy behind the ears whilst telling him that everything would be OK. Although I was more telling myself. Arthur, finn, John and Tommy walked in and Tommy rushed over and knelt beside me. I showed him where it hurt and he touched buddy's back

"He's got a lump" Tommy said

"Well what does that mean? Why?" I asked panicking. He looked at my brothers as they all held worried expression but neither would tell me what was actually wrong. Tommy lifted him up and they put him in the back of the car. I sat with him, trying not to cry, as we went to the vet

"Is he gonna be alright?" I asked Tommy as he drove. But he didn't reply. That was enough of an answer

We got to the vets and they gave him a checkup before I recieved some devastating news. We entered the vets with my best friend. And I left without him. We got home and polly was there with her arms out and tears in her eyes. I ran up to her and broke down sobbing. Buddy was the only friend I had. I know it sounds dramatic but its true. My brothers aren't friends, they are family. Aunt pol is like a mother. I never see ada. And everyone at school ran away from me because of my brothers. Buddy stuck by me no matter what

"We'll get you a new dog princess" John said to me

"I don't want a new dog. I want buddy" aunt pol soothed me and rubbed my back. He may just be a dog. But to me, he was family. There's no other way to put it. Buddy was my child, my friend, my protector. He was my everything. And now he's gone and I won't ever see him again. Well, something in me still has hope that I'll see him some day. Many years from now, he'll be there waiting for me
