Chapter 13 Grief Isn't a Crime

I've been here in Volterra for two months now. Yes, things have somewhat improved from their previous state. By that I mean I'm getting used to it. Amelia seem to be fitting in much better than I am. I'm not sure why, but she has connected with the guard far better than I have.

Aro is obsessed with her and I extending our gifts to their maximum strengths. I can tell you for sure that it is not an easy thing to do. I must admit, Alec is a good teacher. He pushes us hard, but it seems to be working better than you would think.

Amelia has definitely improved on her whole wave of energy thing. She now has almost one hundred percent control over it. She has the ability to make the force as strong, or as weak as she would like. Well, actually there is a limit on how much she can put into it. If she exerts to much power then her physical strength decreases so greatly, she falls to the ground.

Not only can she exert the energy from her whole body at once, but also from any part she chooses. It's quite interesting. When she's not in training with Alec and I, she's working on changing the colors of the wave. Instead of light gray, she can convert it to indigo and lime green. Yes, that aspect isn't very useful, but it's certainly entertaining to watch.

I, on the other hand, have also improved my gift. Once the persons gift ricochets off of my own, I can control it, as long as they are still activating their power. By control, I mean that I can not only backfire it onto the attacker, but also to anyone else I would like, as long as they are within about one hundred yards of me.

Other things have gotten better as well, that do not include gifts. Jane, Amelia, and I have gotten much closer. We are the three musketeers. Once we get started talking, good luck stopping us. The same thing applies with the rest of the higher and lower guard. Other than Alec of course.

Alec and Amelia have become half friendly towards each other. They can carryout a conversation if they choose to do so. Alec and I however, are acquaintance. If needed, we can discuss something. Otherwise, there is silence in the air that is filled with tension.

Today, was our day off. Amelia and I finally had a twenty-four hour break of intensive training. Sadly, Jane was off on a mission, which left us with Alec as a babysitter. Apparently, Amelia and I still demonstrated enough newborn habits that we still had to be looked out for.

Alec was in the throne room talking to the masters about who knows what. Amelia and I were sitting in our shared room together.

"Are you happy?" Amelia asked.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, you seem... I don't know, lost. Ever since this began, you haven't seemed as happy as you've been before."

I sighed. If anyone could tell I was lying, it was Amelia. After all, she was probably the person I've spent the most time with in my life. "Alright, you caught me. I miss it all. My family, my home, and everyone else I our village. Don't you?"

"Yes...." She looked and sounded hesitant. "It's just that it wasn't our fault. We didn't suck our village dry, or set it on fire. We couldn't have stopped it either way. Thalia, don't blame yourself. You have been known to do that."
