A Bond Not Broken

It was Zhen Wen's crying which woke him up. Recently he noticed this has been a frequent occurrence, in the middle of some nights when Zhen Wen would start sobbing and crying, sometimes until he fell asleep. Zhen Wu chose to not confront him, believing that his step-brother-turned-lover needed time to sort through his emotions and believed that Zhen Wen will come to him when he was ready. But tonight, he just couldn't help himself but to ask.

"Babe...are you okay?" he woke and edged closer to Zhen Wen to draw him close for a hug. Tears immediately stained his pajama. He soothed Zhen Wen's back. It pains him to see his lover cry. He has always hated seeing Zhen Wen cry and Zhen Wen was definitely not the kind who would cry out loud if he could help. When Zhen Wen cries, it must be something more.

"Sorry...I just...got overwhelemed," Zhen Wen finally said after a while. He sniffed as he reached out the side table stand to grab tissue to blow his nose. Zhen Wen finally calmed himself but doesn't mean that Zhen Wu wasn't any less worried.

"Why are you crying? Is everything okay?" Zhen Wen nodded and smiled when he looked up to Zhen Wu. Even after so many years, Zhen Wen still maintained that certain shyness in him whenever he looked at Zhen Wu. No matter how long they have been together, it was still endearing for Zhen Wu to notice this part of Zhen Wen. How he loved his step-brother aka boyfriend so much.

"I'm okay. Sorry for making you worry and woke you up. You should get back to sleep. It's an early start for you right?" Zhen Wen said as he urged Zhen Wu back to bed but not that Zhen Wu would without making sure everything is okay with Zhen Wen.

"You know, I am your boyfriend. You can tell me things that are bothering you. It hurts me too when I have to hear you cry without knowing what is going on or how I can console you,"

Zhen Wu decided to take the direct approach. It works best when it comes to stubborn Zhen Wen. Zhen Wen's eyes started to water again. For a moment, Zhen Wu thought the crying will begin again but none forthcoming. Zhen Wen sniffed again and smiled. He leaned up and pecked Zhen Wu on the lips. That was a little surprise for Zhen Wu since it was him who usually initiates any skinships even after years of them being together. It was not that Zhen Wen was passive, far from it but Zhen Wen still manag to retain some form of self-restrain when it comes to touching Zhen Wu. They are both clear as to why Zhen Wu behaved like that.

Their parents.

Since their relationship wasn't what one considered conventional, dating as step-brothers definitely had a lot of downs. It wasn't a fairy tale happy ending for the both of them of course. When their parents found out about their relationship, it was much expected the blame game to start and fingers being pointed at everyone. Zhen Wu bore most of the blame since he was supposed to be the older on in the family and was supposed to be the more responsible one despite their age gap was literally less than a year.

Long story short, both of them left home. While they were not explicitly being disowned by their parents, communication between them definitely dwindled. As both youngsters barely out of university, they did their best to keep it together while going through the reality of life. It was not easy. Both have to balance jobs to keep a roof over their heads in a fairly expensive big city while trying to make their relationship work without letting the truth of life eat too much out of their hope of making it.

Without them realizing, about two years have passed since they left home. Zhen Wen works as an office staff while Zhen Wu took his study a little further, aiming to be a sports coach for the national sports center while juggling part time jobs here and there. The life they are living now was not the most ideal but it was definitely a journey both of them are grateful that they have each other to depend on. Both of them know if they keep working hard, eventually things will get better. At least that was what Zhen Wu hope for. Finish his studies as soon as possible, get a job at the national sports center, get the necessary benefits and salary so he can give Zhen Wen a better life too.

"Can you please tell me what's going on in your mind?" Zhen Wu asked again after a long pause from Zhen Wen. Zhen wen seemed to be in thoughts, probably trying to rearrange his words ion how to respond to Zhen Wu. He took Zhen Wen's hands and massgaed it gently to give him some assurance.

Zhen Wen took a deep breath and said, "Last week, mom called,"

Zhen Wu was taken aback. Their mom, called? Technically, Zhen Wu's mom, Zhen Wen's step-mom. The logic would be she should have called Zhen Wu, not Zhen Wen. But why?

"I didn't tell you because you were busy with your final exams and internship and all. I thought of telling you when you're done tomorrow," Zhen Wen said. Yes, tomorrow's his final papers. Typical of Zhen Wen to keep information like this to himself and carry all the burden by himself if he could help it.

"What did mom say? If she mentioned anything about you breaking up with me, I wouldn't have it. You know that us being together is the real deal and permanent right?" Zhen Wu went off automatically but Zhen Wen stopped with a smile.

"Zhen Wu, calm down. She didn't say that. In fact, quite the opposite," Zhen Wen edged nearer to Zhen Wu for a hug. "She asked how we are doing. And...asked if we would like to meet her for dinner sometime,"

Now that was something. "Did you say yes?" Zhen Wen shook his head.

"I told her I'll check with you and come back to her. Then I didn't hear anything from her since nor did I dared to text her. That invitation was always in my mind so I guess it overwhelmed me some nights like tonight,"

They kept their silence for some while.

"What do you think it will be like if we do go have dinner with her? If I have to be honest, I miss mom...and dad...a lot. I wonder how they are doing...us...missing two years worth of celebrations with them. They have to do tomb sweeps by themselves for two years....,"everything that Zhen Wen said stirred up mixed feelings for Zhen Wu as well. Together, they were supposed to be tight-knit family fo four.

Honestly for Zhen Wu himsef, he was not sure how he would react if his mother were to call him and asked him out for dinner out of the blue. Anything is possible. But one thing Zhen Wu understood was, they need to keep hoping.

"Let's call mom together tomorrow. After I am done with my exams and after you done with work," Zhen Wen looked at him, seemed unsure.

"I don't know what will mom tell us what will be the outcome of the call but...I want us to keep positive no matter what okay? In the end, we have each other. Promise me you will not think of anything but keeping us together?" Zhen Wu cupped his face and spoke in all seriousness.

A tear rolled down Zhen Wen's face again. Seeing that tear even Zhen Wu himself felt his emotions welling up but it wouldn't do both of them good to start crying together. So quickly, Zhen Wu wiped away the stray tear.

"I love you Zhen Wen. Remember that," Zhen wu reminded him. Never once too many times.

Zhen Wen nodded again and smiled.

"I love you too Zhen Wu, we'll always be together. I promise,"

Good. That's the assurance Zhen Wu needed to make sure their bond was a bond not broken, ever.
