Broken

Chapter 4

Adam grumbled as his alarm blared, really wishing he had woken up with Kim in his arms, he grabbed his phone and shut the alarm off. He sent off a quick text 'last night was amazing, I love you' he knew she would still be sleeping but he wanted it to be the first thing she saw when she did wake up.

"Jay" Adam said as they met in front of the 21st District "what's up man?" Adam asked as they walked in together.

"You got a minute?" Jay asked as they stepped inside one of the offices, Jay pulling the door closed behind them.

"What's up?" Adam asked as he sipped his coffee.

"Erin told me about you and Burgess" Jay said "listen, I won't say anything, I hope I can count on you to do the same"

"What the hell are you talking about Halstead?" Adam asked him.

"Erin and I, we're dating, Erin said she told Kim, I figured she would have told you" Jay explained.

Adam smiled, "to be honest Jay, we didn't do much talking last night especially about your sorry ass" he laughed "no worries your secret is safe with me"

Kim tossed and turned on the couch, she hadn't been able to sleep at all, her stomach was a mess, she finally got up and peeked in the bedroom and sure enough Ray was still out cold on her bed. Sighing she turned and headed to the kitchen she had hoped it was an awful nightmare.

She had no idea what to do, she didn't want to break things off with Adam,the last thing she wanted to do was hurt him. She made herself a cup of coffee needing all the help she could get.

"Well, hello beautiful" Ray said as he tried to kiss her cheek.

"Keep your fucking hands and lips off me" she said through clenched teeth "you will not touch me" she told him.

"So, pretty boy sent you a text" he said tossing her the phone "I was going to reply to him, but I figured I would let you do it"

"I'm not breaking up with him in a text message, Ray, he deserves a face to face" she told him as she read the message her heart shattering, she would rather break his heart than Ray physically harm him and she knew Ray wasn't afraid of hurting someone.

"Call him over and do it tonight, I want to hear it" he told her "I'm serious, I mean it"

Kim felt her eyes fill with tears, "I hate you, you know" she snapped.

He pulled his hand back and slapped her in the face "you better watch your mouth,bitch" he wiped spittle from the corners of his mouth "I ain't playin I have no qualms with taking pretty boy out, hell I would enjoy it you could even watch"

Kim just stared at him, sent Adam a text message to come over after his shift and she locked herself in the bedroom.

Later that evening she waited for Adam to show up, her cheek swelling slightly from where Ray had hit her.

Ray stood in front of her "I will be in this closet, I swear if you try and pull some shit, pretty boy is as good as dead" he snarled.

A knock on the door, startling Kim immediately she felt sick to her stomach "get it done Kim" Ray said as he stepped in the closet leaving the door the tiniest crack in the door so he could hear.

Slowly Kim opened the door "hi" she said as he came in.

"God, I've missed you" Adam said as he leaned in to kiss her surprised when she pulled away "Kim, are you okay?" He asked.

"I'm fine Adam" she said he voice shaky she sat on the couch clutching her knees to her chest, Adam sitting beside her, his hand on her knee.

"What's going on, are you mad at me?" He asked his eyes seeking hers.

Kim avoided eye contact she knew if she looked in his eyes she wouldn't be able to break his heart "it's just us Adam, it's a mistake" she said.

Adam couldn't believe what he was hearing "what do you mean?" He pleaded "look at me Kim, I love you and you said you loved me what changed overnight?" He could feel his heart breaking.

Kim was struggling to continue she wanted to wrap her arms around him, but knew if she did, he was as good as dead "I lied, I just was shocked you said it" this was killing her "I think you should leave" she said coldly slapping his hands away when he tried to turn her face toward his, "get out!"

Adam was frozen in place "Kim.." He started to say before she stood up and yelled at him.

"Get the fuck out Adam, now"

Adam stood up and moved toward the door, he looked back at her "I don't know what's going on, but I love you Kim" he said.

He closed the door, "I love you too Adam"'Kim said once the door was closed.

Ray stepped out of the closet "that was beautiful, like academy award worthy"

"Fuck you!" Kim said as she stormed off down the hall.
