The garden shone in the ethereal light of the full moon

The garden shone in the ethereal light of the full moon.

West lay among the blades of grass; entranced by a white rose... A white rose that had once been dying.

It was almost felt as though the rose was a parable to him.

In the years that he had been dying... It had been dying.

And now... The white rose was alive.

And for the first time in years...

West felt alive.

"West..."

His attention shifted from the rose and to the girl, with the gentle voice, who made his heart pound in his chest.

"Anna."

She was beautiful and more ethereal than the light of the full moon.

The full moon... How?

How was she in her human form in the light of the full moon?

"Weslyn and I had a Blood Exchange so I could attend the Ascension Ceremony," she replied, as though she could sense his thoughts. "Are you alright?"

He sat up from the grass.

"Ah, yes, I'm alright."

She lowered herself beside him and their eyes met.

He froze.

Her eyes... They were brown.

But they had not always been brown.

His mind flashed to his first memory of her.

Green... Eyes that were green.

Anna's eyes were once green.

They were as green as the grass he lay on. A beautiful green...A green that was no more, because of him.

A green that was no more; because he forced her to turn into a monster.

A Brown Wolf.

"I am sorry, Anna."

"Why?" she asked.

He instinctively lifted his hand to her cheek.

She did not lean into him but she also did not pull away from him.

Her voice was gentle. "What are you sorry for, West?"

His fingers caressed her cheek, as he stared into her beautiful eyes, which were widened in surprise. "Everything."

And then, his other hand lifted to her shoulder, as he leaned in and kissed her.

He kissed her.

And he felt like his heart was about to leap out of his chest, as she kissed him back.

He had never felt as alive as he had in that moment.

And then, when the moment passed, she pulled away from him.

"Anna..." he breathed, lost for words. "I... Anna-"

"This isn't right, West."

"Why?" He could hear the confusion in his voice.

She turned away from him. "Because, you have a Soulmate."

His chest tightened and throbbed in pain.

But he did not know why.

Why?

Why did his heart hurt more for her than it had for his Soulmate?
