Chapter 19

Catastrophic Past & Present's flooding Memories.....

Penong Palace, 1858 :

'What?' said Wei Ying was in shock and horror. 'What do you mean, Princess? What did he do?'

'I don't know,' Lady Qing was in tears. 'But I think- I think someone's told on us. Who could it be?'

'You think someone told the King that you and YanZhang are- together?' Wei Ying mouthed his worry , the wheels of his mind starting to churn.

Lady Qing nodded. 'Yes. But who could it be, and why?'

A sudden sneaking suspicion ran through Wei Ying , but he quelled it. 'We need to get him out,' he thought aloud. 'We need to get both of you away from here. And we'll be doing it tonight. Go back to your room, Princess. If anyone sees-'

The Princess didn't need to be told twice. Throwing one last grateful look over her shoulder, she left.

'Wuxian ? Is that you?' came a familiar voice from the stables that he knew too well.

He groaned internally , in the middle of setting Lady Qing's horse free. Wei Ying had planned their escape.

However, it looked as though someone had heard him. Someone, meaning Haikuan.

'What are you doing here?' he said in surprise.

'Nothing that concerns you,' Wei Ying said haughtily. 'Do you know where Yan is?'

Haikuan's eyes widened as he saw Wuxian with the horse. 'Are you going to run away with him? Has he finally seen sense?'

'Oh, do shut up,' Wei Ying snapped. 'He's in jail.'

Haikuan's mouth fell open with shock. 'Jail?'

Wei Ying felt that Haikuan had not told the King, or he would have known.

'Yes,' he snapped. 'Now stop bothering me.'

'What's that on your wrist?' he said suddenly, catching Wei Ying's left elbow and swinging it towards him. His eyes were on the white clother over his wrist.

Wei Ying's voice trembled. 'An injury,' he mumbled.

'An injury?' he repeated incredulously. 'But how? Why? And why are you trying to hide it?'

Wei Ying tried to jerk it back, but he wouldn't let go.

'Tell me, Wuxian ,' he repeated. 'Don't you trust me at all?'

Wei Ying sighed. He couldn't see any harm in it. 'Fine. I got this in a battle,' he snapped.

Haikuan's eyebrows rose and met. 'Would it take too much to give me a proper answer?'

He sighed, then launched into the story of how he and Yan had fought the soldiers, then came back. Wei Ying left out the bit where Yan kissed him.

When he'd finished, Haikuan stood staring at him for a long time. 'Wow. You really are a wildcat, aren't you?'

Wei Ying flushed.
