Chapter 29

It's Wei Ying's Birthday!!!

Wei Ying's plans of spending his Sunday curled up in bed with possibly a nice book were curtailed rather abruptly. He had just woken up from bed, yawning and stretching, when a mini-hurricane hurtled through the room and jumped onto his bed.

'Happy Birthday to Wuxian , Happy Birthday to You , Happy Birthday to You...'

It took Wei Ying a moment to remember that it was his birthday.

Zu was still singing at the top of her voice.

'Zu!' he said, swatting at her, laughing. 'Stop deafening me!'

Zu stopped singing, plonked down on the bed making it creak and hugged her brother tightly. 'Happy Birthday, brother ,' she said, her eyes overbright. 'I'm not good at these senti things you know, so I thought I'd go over the top...'

'There's nothing to be senti about.' Wei Ying frowned. 'It's just another day, just...don't let's blow this out of proportion...'

Zu sighed, all her bravado gone. 'This is about Cousin Lucy, isn't it?'

'No!' Wei Ying replied automatically, before he saw the sadness in Zu's eyes. 'Yes,' he said finally, acknowledging the truth. 'It seems weird, Zu... that she's gone. How could you even want to celebrate, knowing that-' he broke off.

Moments later, they were hugging each other and crying. 'I m-m-miss her,' said Zu, tears flowing freely. 'And I used to-to-tease her so much-'

'I'm sorry I wasn't here, Zu ... I'm so sorry, I'm still not with you...' Wei hiccupped.

For a long time, they held each other, and it was as though something had crashed into place : as if they were each other's truest confidantes once again...

But they could never be that for each other, not again. Wei Ying recognized how he had changed, and it wasn't as though he could go back to being himself...but after ages, he felt as though Zu wasn't just his sister, but also a best friend.

Zu was the first one to pull away. 'Can't believe it- I made you cry on your birthday!'

Wei laughed shakily, brushing the tears away. 'I didn't mind, anyway... I needed that.'

He recognized both him and Zu had needed closure.

'Well, enough of the blathering,' said Zu . 'I brought you something, look-'

'Hey! You got me the latest IPad!'

'I know, with earning so much yourself, you could own anything now, but your little sister gifting you is cool, isn't it? You can use it for designing your own collection...that what you always wanted-- right ? ' Zu smiled , her eyes sparkling. 'And what's better is, that's almost all my own money!'

Wei's eyes widened as he looked at the price tag. 'Your-?'

Zu smiled with a touch of pride. 'I've been tutoring a few students,' she admitted.

'No way!' Wei Ying was shocked. In the month and a half that he had spent since coming there, how much had Zu hidden from him ?

Zu grinned. 'Devilish little blighters, those teens are,' she said, sounding her old self,' but I'm even better, you see?'
