Chapter 25
More Mysteries & Never Ending Doubts!
Lan Wangji was quiet all the way back home. Once they entered the Wang Mansion, Wangji made for the privacy of his room without looking back.
Haikuan.
His return had thrown everything off-kilter. Suddenly, his own plans seemed thrown off course. He knew it was foolish, but he couldn't help but blame Haikuan for everything that was going on. And then at the party...
Haikuan had seemed the same as usual...yet he seemed different!
Lan Wangji went over the memory in his head, replaying his brief conversation with Haikuan. 'Why did you help me that night?' he'd asked Haikuan, point-blank. He had looked startled, before he composed himself and had said, 'What night are you talking about?'
'You know very well which night I meant!' Lan Wangji had snapped. Haikuan put on a very unconvincing innocent expression.
'I don't remember any night I helped you... In fact, I'm seeing you for the first time since I came back. Nice to see that you're still playing merry-go-round with my sister in law.'
Wangji rolled his eyes and said coldly, 'Don't even try worming your way back into my family. I know you are here for a reason. Don't think I'll trust you just because you're a human now-'
Haikuan had smirked. 'You must be pretty jealous, huh? I get to be the human, while you don't...tsk, tsk. I get to have Wei Ying as an employee, as a sort of friend...'
'Stay away from Wei ,' hissed Wangji. 'Haikuan, you try harming Wei-- you'll regret it very badly.'
'Last time I got myself killed, baby brother,' Haikuan had smiled.. 'Don't worry, I've got no intentions for Wei Ying--- but as far your behaviour to him is concerned, let me tell you- you're making a huge mistake, brother.'
Before he could ask Haikuan what he meant, Wei Ying had come between them. Wangji had watched Wei carefully- the way he spoke to Haikuan, as thought Haikuan was his friend, rather than a boss.
And something else-when Wei Ying's eyes had flitted towards him for just a moment- he had been very, very sure that Wei Ying was hiding something... Lan Zhan hadn't meant to blow up at Wei Ying , but then his patience was wearing thin with the tight eye catching dresses Wei Ying wore nowadays.
It made Wangji wish he could go back to his earlier plain looking days.
And then, when he had seen Wei drag Haikuan away outside, and he had begged Haikuan not to tell him anything- wangji questioned himself exactly what had that little conversation meant? What did Haikuan knew that he didn't?
Not to mention, Wei Ying keeping secrets bothered him, and now it bothered him most to know that he wanted the secret to be specifically kept from him.
A secret, which Haikuan apparently knew.
Haikuan's reaction to Wei Ying had puzzled him. In a twisted way, Haikuan had actually asked Wei to tell him.
What game was his big brother playing, and what secret was Wei hiding?
A sudden thought struck him. Could it be that Wei Ying had found out something about his own past? Had Haikuan been the one to tell Wei ? If so- pure terror gripped Wangji.
