IN ANOTHER UNIVERSE...
Alejandro and May were together, but the pain of not having parents got to Alec.
Never having the chance to meet his mother and make memories with her and never meeting his father because he didn't want him made Alec think it was him. He thought he was why they left him and that he was unwanted.

Getting with May made those thoughts worse. It wasn't because he didn't love being with May. He loved the girl dearly but couldn't show it—not in a way that mattered to May and how she preserved love, having been surrounded by it her whole life.
Alec started feeling like he didn't deserve May and that it was only a matter of time before she left him. She would one day decide that Alec wasn't worth it and didn't want to be with him anymore.
It was those thoughts that ended Alec and May's relationship.

May tried hard to be with Alec, but she saw something was off with him. She could see he was struggling and didn't know what or why. She knew a little about his feelings regarding his mother and father, but he never opened up more about it.
Alec never honestly talked about how his mother dying and his father never wanting him affected him. But it did, and it was tough on Alec. Knowing how his friends and the people around him had their parents in some way or another bothered him.
Seeing how May interacted with her parents and even Bobby, her stepfather Alec envied her. He didn't want to be jealous of her relationship with her parents, but Alec couldn't help it whenever he saw May with them. He wished it was him with his own parents, whether they were together or not. He just wanted them by his side.
May happened to notice that one day.

May again tried talking with Alec about his feelings, but he was closed off. He never wanted to talk about it, not to her or anyone else. And because he didn't, it was eating away at him and his relationship.
It was then that May realized she had had enough.
She was sick of Alec moping about his feelings and constantly having to reassure him. May loved Alec, and a part of her always will, but there was only so much she could take with him. She didn't want to break up with him; she loved him with all her heart. But his not being able to talk to her about how he felt drained her. She thought she was the only one doing the work for their relationship.
