If you write destiel there is literally no way in heaven hell or anywhere in between where you don't write a fanfic involving Cas's invisible wings. Enjoy my fellow hunters (I'm sorry but SPN family just doesn't sound cool).
It was too late at night to go to sleep, go to a bar, to do anything really. Dean chose to spend his sleepless hours wandering the bunker, not the worst thing he could do now that the darkness had been released and they still had jack squat on its location. He had found a room full of rare items both evil and benign. He came across a jar with a single black feather inside. It wasn't just black though.
The feather was so raven it looked purple and blue, but when Dean picked up the jar and brought it into the light it had an unearthly amount of colors, rich reds, lush greens, ocean blues, and it couldn't seem to decide wether the overall affect of it was black or white. It was beautiful and he thought of only one thing that this could possibly be. "Angel feather"

Dean had taken the feather out of the store room and put it on the map table before he and Sam had left on their hunt for Rowena. Finally Cas was cured of his guard dog curse but Rowena was in the wind. Deans face was too painful to sleep on, so he went out and observed the feather with ice on the worse of his bruises inflicted by a crazed Cas. "Dean, what are you doing up?" He turned to see Cas, still in his signature clothing looking at him with concern and inquisitiveness."I think I found an angel feather in the store room. It looks really cool and it... I dunno, reminds me of when things were easier to handle"
"The apocalypse? I wouldn't describe that as 'easy'" Cas sat down across from Dean at the table and stared into the jar.
"Well, the apocalypse at least made sense. This darkness, this is weird on a different level."
"True" Cas murmured he tilted his head towards the feather and Dean snuck glances at the Angels face. He liked it when he and Cas actually had semi-normal conversation. Suddenly a smile lit up Cas's face. "Dean" he looked up still smiling "this was-is my feather"
"Seriously?!" Dean smiled at Cas's excitement. "Can you, put it back with your other feathers or something?"
"Yes. I don't know how or why I lost it but... Yes I would like to put it back. Will you help?"
"Yeah, sure what do I need to do?" Dean was getting excited that there was a chance to help his angel get back to full power again.
"We need to go outside or else the aura of my wings will smash all the glass inside the bunker" Cas explained as they both got up and exited into a cold October night. When they were on top of the hill above the bunker they stopped and Cas turned to Dean who held the jar carefully. "Ok, take it out of the jar"
Dean opened the top and felt the purity of the angel feather give his cold hands warmth. "Now wha-" he stopped when he looked up. Cas had unfurled his wings to full length, 15 feet of heavenly feathers just like the one Dean now held. "I thought I wasn't special" Cas frowned "I mean I thought I couldn't see your feathers"
"It seems that our bond goes so deep you can perceive some of my true visage, don't be alarmed it is not unusual..." He looked at deans awestruck face. "What is the matter?" He stepped a little closer.
"Nothing it's just- your wings.. They're amazing." Cas blushed at the compliment and turned so Dean could see one spot that didn't have a borealis of color.
"This is where it fell out. All I need is for you to place the feather in the missing spot. It should heal on its own."
Dean approached him with a little bit of awe and placed the feather gently into the blank space. Cas's wings glowed with the final piece back in place and he turned around with a euphoric look on his face. "Dean Winchester" his voice sounded richer, more complete somehow "you've completed me" a flash of light engulfed the hilltop and Dean turned away. When the light faded Cas stood in the same spot and Dean lowered his arm from his face and stared at his friend.
"You look good Cas" Dean smiled at how much better Cas looked. They stood there for a moment and smiled at each other, feeling at peace with Cas's angelic nature for the first time in a long time. Dean broke their spell by shivering and saying "let's get back to the bunker Cas" he turned to go and felt a hand on his shoulder.
"I mean what I said Dean. You complete me" his grip was firm but still gentle and Dean turned and placed his arm on Cas's shoulder as well.
"I think I've know that for awhile Cas" as he grinned and they went back inside to save the world again.
