"Good morning class," our teacher Mrs. Hall said as cheerfully as one could expect, at seven am on a Monday. "Today our objective is to gain an understanding of linear equations," she continues to inform us, pointing to the whiteboard, which house the daily objective, as well as, the schedule.

"Ugh," Jeffery groans. "How about today, we just watch a movie," he adds sarcastically. Playing the comic relief for the class, as always. I smile down at my notebook hearing his voice. It's never long in the day until I do hear it. I know it's stupid. Jeffery and I have been friends for a very long time. He's the loudmouth jokester, and I'm the introvert bookworm. It doesn't make sense, but somehow our friendship just works. Recently, however, I'm been looking at him in a different light. We are seventeen now, and I suppose hormones kicked in, but he hasn't changed. He's still the same guy I met in middle school sixth-grade year.

"Not today," Mrs. Hall smiles, walking over to the projector. She has always been good about appreciating his antics. "Okay, get out your homework for 5.1 and I'll check it off. If you have questions, this is the time to put the problems up," she recites her usual speech, as she makes her rounds.

Jeffery stands up then and makes his way over to my table. "Hey, Shelly," he smiles, as I take out my homework.

"Hey," I reply tucking a piece of my unruly hair behind my ear. Just then I hear Sarah laughing obnoxiously at something Garrett said.

"So, I was doing some soul searching these last few days, and I know there is a dance fast approaching, and I know it's cliche..." he continued. OMG! Is he going to ask me to the dance? My heart starts racing excitedly. "But I was curious if you would maybe, perhaps think about going with a dorkishly handsome man like me?" He added with a nervous smile.

"Uh--," I stumbled at first my mouth not able to function properly.

"If you don't want too that's fine. I understand. I don't want this to affect out friendship." He began to backtrack. Stop! I started to shake my head, no, at his words.

Just then, Coach Penny, the security guard, enters the classroom room. His face is calm, but I can tell something is very very wrong. His face is never calm it always holds a bit of humor.

"Mrs. Hall," he calls, and she immediately goes to him. He whispers into her ear, so I can't hear her.

"Jeffery, I want to go to the dance with you," I say suddenly to speak my words coherently. I see the giant grin on his face as he starts to blush, which is a first.

When I turn back to see what's going on between Coach Penny and Mrs. Hall, he leaves. As soon as, he does, Mrs. Hall walks to the door, and lock it from the inside, so no one could enter. Something is seriously wrong. No one locks their doors here.

"Mrs. Hall, what's going on?" Veronica asks, gaining the attention of the whole class. I have an urge to reach out and grab Jeffery's hand, and for the first time in six years of friendship, I act on it.
