Death ends a life, not a relationship -- Mitch Albom

"Shh," Robert hushed, as I shook, in his arms. "We'll be okay," he whispered into my ear, answering my silent fear. It was the same fear I had whenever we did this.

I nodded gaining my courage. "We march for us," I stated, lifting my head to meet his light brown eyes. He smiles at me kindly, holding my hand, while I'm still tucked close to his heart. I gaze at our fingers intertwined. His deep dark complexion against my fair. They say it's wrong. That our love is a disgrace a cruse against God himself. But it's them, who are wrong! Nothing makes me more certain than feeling the hand of the man I love and have loved since I was a little girl.

It's not that I don't see color. I see color. We all do, but I see nothing wrong with it. I see beauty in colors. We are God's coloring box. You cannot buy one color, you must buy them all, and when you color, each one is used and loved, and transformed from a simple color to a beautiful piece of art.

I tried to explain this to Papa, but he just scuffed, referring to me as a foolish child. When I told Robert, he smiled widely, "You think God, would see our child as art?" I nodded. "There's  no one like you, Joan."

I felt Robert rub my hand, bringing me back to the bus that we are currently in. "like a tree that stands by the water, we shall not be moved," everyone was chanting. We were on a bus to Atlanta to join the great Martain Luther King. He sparked a movement like no other. And Robert and I wanted to meet him, so very badly. We hopped on the bus from California, and have been driving ever since.

No one could sleep with all the excitement, but once the chants had died down, people began to converse."So, what you two gettin' married?" one of the girls from the bench beside asked. She had mocha skin and bright green eyes.

I turned and smiled brightly,"Well, this one hasn't asked yet." I lightly pat Robert's chest, feeling my cheeks burning brightly from the question. He chuckles beside me but places a kiss on my forehead.

When I looked up I saw a slight change in his eyes, as he whispered to her, "Joan? Do you want to marry?" It seemed like he was nervous.

"Of course I do, but I will not accept that as the proposal. There was too much doubt there," I stated, turning my head and winking at the girl, who sparked this new discussion.

"Well alright then," he mumbled, before getting up from he seat beside me. Before passing me, he placed one more kiss on my cheek. And I watched nervously as he made his way to the front of the bus.  He talked to one of the men.

"What is that boy up too?" the girl asked.

I just shook my head. I wish I knew.

Then, there was a microphone in his hand. "Attention, everyone. I'm sorry to disturb you all. But I have an announcement and I can't think of a better time or place. You see, there is a woman on this bus that I love more than anyone in the world. She has changed me in more ways than one. And I want to make her my wife." My eyes were as wide as saucers as people began looking my way. I'm sure I looked like the frightened smiling fool. As he added, "Joan Marie Hayes will you marry?" he asked, slowly getting down on one knee in front of the whole bus of people.
