Chapter 19

Diamond

I blinked my eyes open then sat up in the bed. My whole body ached and I was sore all over. It hurt just to breathe. I looked around and noticed that I was in a hospital. I had on a plastic, blue gown and I noticed that I was on an IV. I put my face in my hands not trying to remember the flames, the dead bodies, or the sound of the shooting. I couldn't really remember what happened after I saw the jeeps gone. It just felt like I've been asleep this whole time until now. A nurse had walked past my door, but got a glimpse of me sitting up. "She's awake, she's awake". I heard her say. A doctor rushed into the room along with a cop. The doctor had pulled up a chair and sat down in it.

"Hello honey". He said. Both of the men were white and had the ugliest smiles. I knew that they were trying to make me feel better with the smiling, but they were really pissing me off.

"Do you mind answering a few questions"? The cop asked.

"Yeah, because.......honey we don't even know your name". The doctor said. I just starred at them. "Well I'm Dr. McCulley and this is Officer Hinlenn". Officer Hinlenn pulled out a note pad and pen and started to jot things down on it. "Honey, you have to speak". Dr. McCulley told me.

"And if I do then what"? I asked smartly. "I hate when people are all up in my business".

"Honey". Officer Hinlenn said. "We are trying to help you. Now if you can explain to us what happened last night at three-fifteen in the morning and what you were doing there.............". I wasn't telling them shit about the shoot out. I wasn't no snitch. All I wanted to know was where my baby Cruze was.

"I don't remember". I lied.

"Well you have to remember something". Officer Hinlenn pleaded.

"Well, I'm sorry.........I don't".

"Look. Maybe we can start with your name".

"It's Diamond...........Diamond Rosemont". I say.

"Okay". The officer said jotting my name down on the notepad. "Could you explain to us what you were doing at Nelson Park recreation center last night? It's supposed to be torn down soon. It's abandoned so what were you doing there at three in the morning"?

"I don't remember". I said lying my ass off.

"Little girl, where are you from"? The officer asked losing patience.

"I come from Queens". I said rolling my eyes.

"Wait, if you live in Queens then what are you doing here in Harlem"?  Officer Hinlenn asked, and that's when I realized that I was still in Harlem. That terrified me. I covered my mouth in shock. I had school tomorrow. How was I going to get home?

"Wait! No.....I gotta get back home". I said trying to get up, but Dr. McCulley pushed me back down.

"You can't go". He said. "Not until we figure out some things about you first". Officer Hinlenn left the room and Dr. McCulley stayed to examine me. When Officer Henlinn came back a social worker had followed him.

"Patricia, this is Diamond Rosemont". Officer Hinlenn told the social worker. She had dark brown skin, she was skinny, and had long dread locks pinned up into a bun. She had on an ugly, plain dress and was holding allot of papers and folders. She pushed her glasses up on her nose and starred at me.

"Hello, Diamond". She said to me. My head hurt and my body ached. I didn't feel like being bothered with these people. I was just worried about how I was going to get home and if I was ever going to see Cruze again. "I've come to ask you some questions". I rolled my eyes. More questions. "How old are you honey"? I was mad that since the officer couldn't get anything out of me that he had to go get some ugly bitch to be up in my business too.
