Chapter 25

The Truth

Meera had never felt a Father’s love so intense for his daughter as she saw his in his eyes. For a moment, she wanted her father to be like this man but she knew that he was back in India going to offices and working hard. She admitted to herself that she could see some similarities in their faces whenever she carefully brushed her gaze over the face of the unknown man but dismissed the thought as soon as it had appeared, reasoning it was absurd. She didn’t know the man nor have ever seen him.

“I’m sorry, but I think you are misunderstood, sir. I’m Meera Sharma. Rohan Sharma is my father. They live in India.” Se said, cautiously. The cold feeling still surrounded her heart. But she wanted things to remain the same as they were till now and avoid any possibility of them changing.

She saw Zayn put his hand on the man’s shoulder and the fear increased. The cold feeling spread more but she tried to stand her ground. The man looked at Zayn a little hurt and whispered, “You… didn’t tell her?” Zayn couldn’t speak a word instead just shook his head negatively.

“She needs to know.” Harry’s voice boomed in the room. Gina then, really looked at him. There was no trace of the Harry she had known since their childhood. He was more mature than ever, serious and brave. He stood his ground despite the fact that his knees were weak, scared by the fact that his girlfriend, his love was about to get some serious hurt. But he knew that it was now or never.  “She has the right to know.” His voice sounded firmer yet weaker.

“Need to know what?” Her voice rose. Meera did not one thing that is to b kept in the dark. The fact that two international pop stars know something about her which she herself didn’t know, heated her up. Not literally but in a way it was infuriating.

“Meera…” Zayn sighed and decided it needed to be done but not in front of an audience. He turned to the man and said, “Come,” and grabbed Meera’s wrist and pulled them in his room upstairs; Harry, Dave, Liam and Raj following behind them silently. All were afraid to make any noise.

Downstairs, Patricia urged the guests to continue the party and not to worry.  Except for Gina and Gemma, everyone settled back in the atmosphere easily. Both of the women were worried and curious. They saw Waliyah, Doniya and Safaa talking with Patricia quietly. They thought better than to inquire them and just sat on the couch, waiting for whatever that would happen next.

“Up in the room, Dave closed the door behind him. He faced the two brothers, Raj and Ram, the two lovers, Harry and Meera, and Liam, who stood beside his best friend and love, Zayn. Liam knew everything. Back when Zayn had broke down in front of Liam, he had spilled out everything. Liam squeezed his hand in encouragement and Zayn told them the history.

“I was 12 years old when I was outside one day. I was crossing the road with an Ice Cream when I heard a car screeching. By the time I looked at it, it was too late. I was o sure that I was going to get hit but I didn’t. Raj, here,” He gestured to the man, “had pushed me out of the way and he got hit instead. We were all worried. He was in come for 3 months. We found he had no family and he had recently moved in Bradford and was our neighbor. Since then, we were close to each other. He told me about his wife, Neha and his two daughters, Naina and… Meera Sharma.”

Meera stopped breathing for a second and harry tightened his grip on her hand, sensing her shock. He didn’t know this side of story. Nor did he knew Zayn was ever in an accident.

“It’s you, Meera. His daughter.”

“How can you say that?! How?!” She wanted to scream but her throat felt dry and scratchy.

“Because, he’s my younger brother.” Everyone looked at Ram. “Yes Meera. He is your real father. And Rohan is your uncle, like me. When you were three years old, your s-sister Naina was eleven. There was a fire in the house. But it wasn’t accidental, we think. No one knew what was going on with Naina till then until one night, she had started screaming while watching cartoon on television. She was panicked, she had fear in her eyes and she screamed ‘fire!’ all the time she was in the daze. But, everyone had ignored her cries. This had happened more than once.”

“One night,” Raj spoke, “Neha, your mother, went downstairs to get water. Next thing I heard was Naina’s scream of fire. I went downstairs with you in my arms, panicked and saw the house was on fire. You were so scared, Meera. I quickly got you out of the house and was about to go back in when your uncles held me back. The fire had gotten worse and the door was blocked with burning wood. The fire fighters had come. But all the time, all we heard were their screams. Screams for help. And standing there, not being able to save my family was one of the worst feelings anyone could ever feel. When they… when they got them out, they were severely burned. We got them to the hospital as soon as we could but that did no good. They… they died in the fire, Meera. You were unconscious for a long time too. When you woke up, you had lost the part of the memory of the fire. We decided it was for the best. But I knew I could not hide the truth from you when you would grow up, ask about your mother, your sibling when you would go through picture or other records. I wasn’t in the stable condition to raise you alone either. That’s when I decided that it would be best if you stayed with the youngest brother, Rohan.”

“And… for all this time you were… here?” Meera’s voice was barely a whisper but everyone heard her. She felt betrayed by her brother Dave, her best friend Zayn, everyone, even her uncle. Now, she literally felt cold, the beads of sweat forming on her forehead, he hands clammy and Harry felt it.

She was about to collapse on the ground when everyone rushed to her. Harry held her in his arms as he shouted at her unconscious body to wake up. Ambulance was called; she was ushered in the ER.
