Reassurance

She stares at him with confusion written on her face as the weight of what he has said settles on her shoulders. He is looking everywhere that is not here, and the distance between them seems greater than it ever has. His hand shifts to switch its position from where it lies on the table between them, but her hand quickly joins his. She grips it tightly and holds in place as he finally glances her way.

"Did you think you were alone," she questions in a whisper. He quickly redirects his gaze, and that is the only answer she needs. She feels her chest constrict with something she can't identify. She gives his hand another squeeze in reassurance, "before you never were. You were never alone, and you never will be."
