BONUS CHAPTER 11: Can't Let Go
~Grayson: Age 25~
I walked into the living room where Poppy was getting Orchid ready to go out. "Flower, I tried waking up Ryder, but he's really sick," I said. "I felt his forehead and he's warming up."
Poppy frowned. "Really?"
"Yeah, really," I said.
"Oh, well then I call the teacher to tell her that Ryder won't be there for the first day," Poppy said.
Sweet.
Footsteps then came down the stairs and before I could do anything, Ryder walked into the living room, all changed and his backpack slung over his shoulder. "I'm ready for school!" he announced.
"I thought you were sick," Poppy said.
"What? No," Ryder said. "I'm not sick."
"Grayson, really?" Poppy said. "Why would you say he's sick?"
"He is," I said. "He's delusional right now, so I'll just take him back to bed."
"Stop fibbing, father," Ryder said. "I'm not sick. See, Mommy? Feel my forehead."
Ryder walked over to Poppy and she felt his forehead. "Grayson, why did you lie?" Poppy asked. "He's fine."
"Liar."
Okay, so I have to admit, I really don't want to let Ryder go to kindergarten today. He was growing up too fast and I'd rather have him at home then at school where he would be bored for the next thirteen years of his life.
I was going to have some serious separation issues when he went to school.
Poppy just rolled her eyes and continued getting Orchid ready, so I had to find the other two triplets. They were way too active and most of the time, we couldn't find Alan. He loved hiding on us, thinking we were playing hide and seek all the time.
I found Nolan sitting on the dining room table, eating an apple from the fruit basket. I sighed and picked him off of the table and brought him to the living room. Poppy said she would get him ready since she finished with Orchid.
It took me a while to find Alan, but I eventually did. He was sitting in the laundry basket in the laundry room.
I got him ready and soon enough, it was time for us to leave. I carried both Alan and Nolan to the car and Poppy carried Orchid.
On the way to Ryder's new school, I drove a bit slower than usual. Poppy kept telling me to drive faster, but I didn't listen.
I pulled into the parking lot. "So, who wants to go to McDonald's?" I asked.
"Grayson, Ryder has to go to school," Poppy said as she took off her seatbelt.
I sighed, getting out of the car before helping Alan and Nolan out. Alan wanted me to carry him, but Nolan wanted to walk this time. He held onto Ryder's hand as we walked to Ryder's classroom.
The bell was going to ring in five minutes, so we waited outside. The boys played together while Orchid pulled Poppy where some flowers were and began picking them.
When the bell rang, Ryder excitingly ran to his classroom, making me frown. "He didn't even say goodbye," I said.
"Grayson, seriously, you're acting like you're the one in kindergarten," Poppy said. "He's excited to go."
"But he's my baby."
Poppy rolled her eyes. "Come on, let's just go. We can get some breakfast at McDonald's."
"Fine," I muttered.
Right as the five of us were about to leave, Ryder called out, "Daddy!" I turned around and he ran to me, giving me a hug. "Don't go."
I bent down in front of him. "I thought you were excited to go to kindergarten," I said.
"I was," he said, tears forming around his eyes. "But I don't want you to leave."
I didn't want to leave either.
"You'll be fine," I said. "After school, I'll take you out for ice cream, okay?"
"Okay," Ryder said, wiping his tears away before hugging me again. "I'll miss you, Daddy."
"I'll miss you too, Ryder," I said, hugging him back. When I pulled away, he then went to go hug Poppy.
"I'll miss you, Mommy," Ryder said.
"I'll miss you too," Poppy said. "But you'll have a lot of fun, okay?"
Ryder nodded before giving me one more hug, then going into his classroom.
I stood up, taking a deep breath. "Are you sure you'll be okay?" Poppy asked me.
"Yeah," I said. "I guess I just have to deal with the fact that he's growing up."
