Cars whizzed by in blurred streaks. Louis drove, keeping me warm by his side. The night was coming on faster than I had expected, dying the sky orange and pink and green, the color of rainbow sherbert. Then came some red tints and the sky looked as if it were a blazing inferno. It appeared beautifully dangerous.
A while later we came to a quiet part of the city; trees lined each side of the road, their branches barren with light coverings of snow.
New York became magical in the winter, as well as the fall. I creased my eyebrows as I saw the park ahead. I knew that place...
Louis brought the bike to a hault and we hopped off, setting the helmets on the handlebars. As we walked, he swung the keys around his index finger and there's no telling why he appeared so flawless as he did it.
I looked harder and longer at the park and then gasped as my eyes fell upon a certain picnic table I once ate my lunch on.
Louis smiled as he recounted a distant memory. He pointed to the opening of a path and said, "remember our first kiss?"
"No," I said sarcastically . "Not at all. We kissed?"
He grabbed my hand and started for the path. "Well, let me refresh your memory."
The sky was deep red, like the clouds were bleeding. The lamps along the path started to turn on automatically ahead of us.
I spotted the bench and the butterflies hit me like a freight train. I remember promising him that I would never hurt myself again. And then when his eyes slowly closed and his lips came forward and met with mine. How had I been so scared then? How had I been so afraid of love?
He sat down on the end of the bench and I stretched my legs out to the opposite end and leaned against his side. We watched through the trees as the sun went down in complete silence with faint smiles on our faces. Louis was twirling the tips of my hair around in his fingers and at times his touch would linger on my neck, gently. I didn't protest.
"This is nice," I said.
It was quiet for a couple more moments and then he said, "Saby?"
I looked up at him. "Yea?"
"Well... I know you've been living at Melissa's for the last month and I know you were thinking about leaving. But I don't want you to go back to living with your brother and his dad. You told me how awful it was."
It was strange hearing him say Melissa's name. I didn't even think he knew her until today and I had never even seen them together. Not once.
"I wasn't going to go back there. Trust me. I'll figure something out though."
His eyes started to glitter mischievously. I turned my body around to face him and I had a small suspicion about what he was getting at. "What?" I asked slyly.
He scratched the back of his neck nervously. "Well, you know, if you, uh, wanted to you could..."
He was having trouble saying the right words and then suddenly he blurted, "you can stay with me."
Oh no... what was I to do? I had made new friends at my school and I was also beginning to get my grades up. Wouldn't that mess things up a bit? And... to live with Louis? In a completely different country? And, oh, I really wanted to. I wanted to be with him so bad and I knew that if I didn't agree I would most definitely lose him again.
"It's okay," he said, replying to the silence. "I didn't expect you to say yes."
I sighed. "I'm sorry Louis. I guess you'll have to deal with another person living in your house for a while now."
"Yea..." it took him a second to register what I had just said, and when he realized, his eyes widened. "Wait... what?!"
I shrugged. "Well where else would I go?"
I hugged him around the waist and he hugged me back. "Thank you," I said. "Thank you so much!"
The crinkles by his eyes were irresistible. I laughed and he joined right in. His soft lips collided with mine and he held me tighter. The sky was a salmon pink color, the sun completely out of sight, and if you looked closely you could see the stars. I began thinking that it was the best day of my life... and then my phone vibrated in the pocket of the jacket I was wearing.
I ignored it at first. And then a minute later, it vibrated again. And then twice more after that.
I groaned. "Who could be texting me like that?"
Louis raised an eyebrow. "Maybe you should see."
I gave him a sad face. "Really?"
He nodded, looking a little put down. Whoever it was was definitely going to hear it later. Then just as I took my phone out, it started ringing. I rolled my eyes, apologized to Louis again, and answered.
"Hello?"
"Saby!" It was Melissa, her tone sounded frantic.
"Mel? Is everything okay?"
"Well," she said. "Define okay."
I exchanged a glance with Louis whose eyebrows were dipped down in concern.
"What's going on?" My heart started to beat uncomfortably.
"It's, uh... well..."
"What?!"
She gulped. "Your brother."
