Lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda

James/Bucky is your child in this one-shot.

Think like the young Bucky from the comics but dead.

2 years later...

'There are moments that the words don't reach, There is suffering too terrible to name. You hold your child as tight as you can. And push away the unimaginable. The moments when you're in so deep, It feels easier to just swim down. The Rogers move uptown. And learn to live with the unimaginable.'

You cried into your pillow alone in your room, the door locked. Your husband sat in the garden alone on a cold stone bench.

-

"I spend hours in the garden. I walk alone to the store. And it's quiet uptown. I never like the quiet before." Steve softly sang, his hands in his pockets. "I take the children to church on Sunday. A sign of the cross at the door, and I pray...that never used to happen before...." He walked up the steps to the church his children ahead of him. Looking up he saw the cross and bowed his head as he enter God's home.

'If you see him in the street, walking by, himself, talking to himself, have pity'

Steve stood in the middle of down square as people passed by him.

"Bucky you would like it uptown it's quiet uptown." A small sob escaped his lips as he covered his mouth with his hand. No one noticed the tears of this man. Nobody.

'He is working through the unimaginable. His hair has gone grey. He passes every day. They say he walks the length of the city'

It was true. In the early morning Steven Rogers would be up and go out, walking from home to the town, every inch. His once blonde hair turned into gray hair. His once beautiful blue eyes held bags underneath and small wrinkles.

"You knock me down, I fall apart." His voice cracked.

'Can you imagine?'

The streets were nearly empty, town square was nearly deserted. In the center was you and your husband Steve. He stood about four feet behind you, you wore a empty expression your eyes misted over, ever since you watched your son die.

"Look at where we are. Look at where we started. I know I don't deserve you, Y/N. But hear me out....that would be enough." Steve sang.

"If I could spare his life, If I could trade his life for mine. He'd be standing here right now, And you would smile, and that would be enough." His fist slowly balled into fists as he fought back the tears. "I don't pretend to know, the challenges we're facing, I know there's no replacing what we've lost, and you need time." Slowly he walked forward. "But I'm not afraid, I know who I married. Just let me stay here by your side, that would be enough." His voice cracked at the end. A tear slid down his face as he looked at the ground besides you as you looked ahead, your eyes glazed over, tears threatening to spill.

'If you see him in the street, walking by her side, talking by her side, have pity'

"Y/N do you like it uptown? It's quiet uptown."

'He is trying to do the unimaginable. See them walking in the park, long after dark, taking in the sights of the city'

It was quiet between you and Steve as you walked through the park.

"Look around, look around, Y/N."

'They are trying to do the unimaginable.'

'There are moments that the words don't reach. There is a grace too powerful to name. We push away what we can never understand, we push away the unimaginable. They are standing in the garden, Steve by Y/N's side, She takes his hand,'

"It's quiet uptown." You sang softly, grasping Steve's hand.

"Forgiveness. Can you imagine? Forgiveness. Can you imagine?'

Steve finally let out the tears as he gently squeezed your hand. Your other arm slowly wrapped around the one you were holding as you rested your head on his shoulder.

'If you see him in the street, walking by her, side, talking by her side, have pity
They are going through the unimaginable'
