Colin looked at the clock and saw that it had been half an hour since he woke from his nap. He was happy to see that his phone was blinking with a new message. Lucky for Anna, it was from her.
"Just letting you know I am heading towards Nate tomorrow but we are stopping a couple of places outside of Sacramento first. My friend has an Aunt that lives outside of California that invited us to stay the night and go through her stuff. The Aunt is a Travel Events Coordinator and has ideas about our Island. I wanted to see what she had to say, plus leave her some of our information because she has world-wide connections. I am going to offer her a discount deal, if everything works out. I'm adding some gypsy wear to my Wedding arsenal and am inspired. I confirmed my stay at Nate's just now, and will head back home on Wednesday. I'll be home by Thursday night late or Friday morning if I have to get a hotel to sleep. This drive is long. It's strange to think I'll never make this trip again, but excited to build an empire. I had packages sent to the island with the address you gave me and I might have accidently double charged my card, could you check please? I promise to let you know everything. I love you, talk soon!"
Colin read the message twice. He knew he wanted Anna to just return home, but was also willing to let her enjoy this last time with her friends before she went to work for the rest of her life in a place where most people would vacation. This was the most city activity she was going to have for a while. He just wished he knew the girlfriends she was traveling with and wondered if they could be more trouble than Harmony. He would feel so much safer if Nate was close to her, but knew that he was at least paying attention to where Anna was and would go after her in a moment's notice. Colin wasn't ready yet because he needed to say a final goodbye to Tessa.
If they weren't moving, then he would keep Tessa, but since they were, it was the only way he was going to be able to move on. To kill her, to get away from her forever and stop being tortured by her even though he was the one doing the torturing. She was already dead to everyone else. But it wasn't like Colin really wanted to get away from her, he just didn't think he would be able to trust her if he stayed with her. She was weak. Hadn't he always known this? Had she ever known that about herself? In all truth she was recognized mostly for the positions between the sheets in her fight to the top as a centerfold in the skin magazines. Sex had always come before everyone else with Tessa. It was one of the things he hated about her.
Then Colin thought of how he felt when he thought of her smile. The way she looked when she was sleeping. The way he felt just being in the same room with her. The way her hands touched his skin as if he was the only one for her, but her looks were deceiving and he has been punishing her since the first time she broke his heart.
Colin's soul felt stretched. These contradictive emotions were more torture than anything physical could have been. The secrets, all of them, were too much to deal with. He could keep them, but Tessa kept making them. Every day that went by, was a day to be wary of for it held promises that he knew she wouldn't fulfill, not with her full soul. She could have, had she had that much control of her body and mind. Tessa just couldn't be satisfied with one person and from the beginning, if Colin was honest with himself, had known this. Even after all that has happened, Colin hoped with all of his heart that things could be different, but he just hadn't been able to build up trust for her. Now he wasn't sure he ever could, so maybe he didn't have to.
He didn't want to get rid of her up until the very last minute and entertained the thought of keeping her. Colin knew he shouldn't, as it would be creepy for Anna to stare at a mother she never knew, every day. Besides, Tessa didn't deserve Anna's attention. Tessa didn't even really deserve his. No, he would have to bury her. That is what she deserved, Colin thought.
With energy he sat up carefully remembering that he had the tendency to fall on his ass if he moved too fast. The drugs he had to take made him much more sensitive with everything he did. It seemed as if every emotion, action, and movement was again overdramatically heightened. After a few moments to feel steady on his feet, Colin walked inside his closet to the locked door. He opened the secret door and stepped inside locking it behind him.
