"Daddy!"
Kyle's eyes popped open. He started into the darkness of his bedroom where only the moonlight from the window showed the outline of some of the furniture. He wasn't exactly sure what woke him but he was sure he heard the scream of his daughter's voice. Alicia was still lying next to him facing the opposite direction but he watched her body moved in a steady breathing pattern so he knew she was still asleep. He was uncomfortable but wasn't sure why as he looked around his empty room. Kyle closed his eyes to try and fall back asleep.
"Daddy." Kyle's eyes flew open at the whispered voice of his little girl. Kyle couldn't move his body at first. He couldn't run to her. He reached out for her in the direction he heard her voice.
Kyle looked through his open bedroom door convinced it was her scream that called him and her whisper that made his brain move. He turned to look at his wife and her back was to him. He didn't want to wake her thinking that maybe a cat was caught in the cold snow and was crying to get into someone's house, a neighbor's or possibly his. He wouldn't mind bringing in a cat because his dog Luna loved snuggling with cats after they got past his height. Luna was laid out in her bed across the room deep in sleep. For those who didn't know better, Luna was as tall as a man when she was stretched out and looked like one in the dark shadows. Thank goodness Kyle knew better.
"Daddy." He heard Stacy beg. Finally waking from his paralyzed state, Kyle snuck out of bed slowly as to not wake his wife up but saw Luna twitch. He froze not wanting to wake her up either. He grabbed his gun from his side table and immediately put his pajama pants on since he loved sleeping naked with his wife after a wonderful night in each other's arms. Tying the string he rushed to the door to slip through the opening into the darkness of the hallway.
"Daddy." Kyle heard Stacy call him again as if she was hurt. He ran to Stacy's room, threw open her door, and turned on the light while pointing his gun in different directions. There wasn't anyone inside. It was exactly as she had left it. The big pink box was sitting on the top of her dresser. He stood still just staring into her room as if her voice was once again going to come from it. He listened to the stillness hoping she would guide him to her. Kyle had a terrible feeling in the center of his stomach and his heart felt like each beat weighed more than his total weight.
"Daddy please help me." He heard Stacy's voice faintly. Kyle ran around the top level of the house clearing every room then headed towards the stairs when he looked over the railing and saw Stacy lying at the bottom of the floor in strange angles. Kyle started to run down the stairs frantically since it as obvious she had fallen.
"No, no, no, no, Baby-girl, no, no, no." He kept saying to himself. Kyle headed a few steps down the stairs and must have missed one because suddenly he started rolling, and rolling, hitting his head and his elbow as his vision caught a wrong angle of one of his legs flying in a crazy direction.
Kyle opened his eyes. His eyes were blurred and Alicia was calling his name. Kyle realized that he was lying at the bottom of the steps from the fall that didn't seem real.
"Kyle, are you alright? What in the hell happened?" Alicia asked startled and worried.
Kyle stumbled to his feet and couldn't yet tell her anything as he rushed to where Stacy was. Luna was standing stiff on all fours as she watched Kyle's every moved. He knew if they had an intruder Luna wouldn't even bother with the stairs because she would jump over the railing to land on and attack their intruder. It is one of the things he loved most about her.
Kyle fell to the floor as his legs felt weak when he didn't see Stacy. He called her name.
"Alicia, where is she? Where did Stacy go?" Kyle said still frantic.
"Honey stop it you are scaring me." Alicia said helping Kyle stand to his feet again.
"Where is Stacy?" Kyle asked again.
"On her trip. She didn't call and you said not to worry because she probably just got in late. We'll hear from her tomorrow. You were sleepwalking." Alicia tried to reassure him.
"I don't sleep walk." Kyle replied.
"Well like it or not Love, you did. You were not awake when you got out of bed and I heard you fall and roll down the stairs." Alicia said still holding onto his arm. He was glad because his head hurt and his brain was barely comprehending where Stacy was.
Kyle stared at the floor where he had seen Stacy in a lump just moments before, or at least where he thought he had seen Stacy. He ran his fingers through his hair.
"I had the worst nightmare." Kyle said. He looked at his wife.
"Anything I can help you with." Alicia said and as he was staring at her, he knew he couldn't tell her.
"No. I can't even remember the details but I think Stacy and I were skydiving." Kyle said making Alicia laugh.
He walked behind Alicia as she led him back up the stairs. Kyle's body started to feel sore but his heart didn't release the heaviness he had felt in his dream. He turned and looked behind him, as Jolene's legs disappeared into the shadows and it was then that he knew it was Jolene that tortured his dreams into nightmares.
Kyle used the bathroom to clean up and check the extent of his injuries, nothing but a few minor scrapes on his arms and a bump on his head. He looked into the mirror and started to tear up as his heart tried to release some of its weight. He had never had a dream so real before. He couldn't wait to get Jolene's fucking case solved for her aggression is ripping him apart. Kyle took two head pain relievers his wife bought at the store for the headache he was hoping to avoid waking up with.
In his room, Alicia had folded back the covers. He saw Luna had taken residence in her bed again and was passed out faster than any human he knew could. Kyle slipped into bed with his back against his wife's breasts as she cuddled her body now dressed in a nightgown against his. Her arm reached around to his chest and he took her hand into his then pulled her closer. It was only moments before he felt her regular breathing steady out.
Kyle however couldn't sleep at all.
