the bowling alley smelled like grease and old cigarettes. it was fairly busy for 8:45 at night. lots of middle aged men were bowling with their friends, which pete had all assumed it was the local alcoholic circle. they all had beer bottles, and they all probably belonged to maybe seven of the local bars.

there were also lots of family's there, along young children not properly being able to throw the ball. one little girl dropped the ball on her foot and started crying. pete felt bad for chuckling at the sight.

pete saw travie, william, patrick and gabe all talking by the arcade. pete immediately felt his blood go cold looking at gabe, who was busy talking to william and patrick.

pete knew that gabe wouldn't make anything awkward. he wasn't like that. but that still didn't help the sudden anxiety rushing over him.

"be cool." pete whispered to himself, walking over to the group.

just as pete was about to say hello and strike up a very awkward coversation, jack and alex stormed in. "fuck, it was cold outside! thank god i didn't fall in the snow, that would've sucked ass." jack laughed.

"hi guys." alex said, taking off his gloves and stuffing them in pocket.

the group all started walking towards the lanes.

"okay, so travie and i got the lanes sorted out. we're lanes 50 & 51. you just gotta get your shoes." patrick said. "where's mikey, pete?"

"he should be here soon. i offered to give him a ride but he said he was okay."

"ah. i see." patrick said.

"did ryan say to anybody he was coming?" patrick asked once they reached the lanes.

"still too emo to function." alex answered.

patrick didn't respond, but nodded in understanding. "pete, i'll get your shoes for you. find out where mikey is."

"he's probably driving-" pete said, but to no use as patrick was already walking off to the front alongside jack and alex. travie and william walked off too, leaving pete and gabe alone.

"hey." gabe said, a small smile lurking on his face as he spoke to pete. "sorry, i'm not good at starting conversation... at all. not my strongpoint."

pete chuckled at that. "it's okay."

gabe cleared his throat. "hey uh, do you wanna talk after this? a talk is probably long overdue." he said, sitting down on one of the bowling chairs. "sorry, i probably just made things tense." he chuckled again.

gabe was scared shitless of how to actually talk to him, after not doing properly for so long. talking to patrick was hard enough, but patrick was nicer then pete and can't stay mad at somebody for a long time.

"of course we can talk, gabe." pete answered, sitting across from gabe. "i planned to ask you if you wanted to, anyway."

"okay, good." he replied.
