I could feel every girl in the locker room's eyes on me.
My secret was out.
"Oh, by the Angel..." A blonde girl said.
I had to get out of here.
"What happened?" Cecily asked.
Now.
I shoved through the group of girls and sprinted out of the gym. The bell rang to signal the start of class, but I didn't care. I kept running.
But there was no way I could ever outrun my problems.
They chased me, and I could never, ever stop running.
I ran from the ghost of my parents.
I ran from Nate.
And now I ran from the girls in my gym class.
I sank down against a wall, unable to control my tears and my shaking.
My secret was out.
If Nate found out what happened, I would not see the light of tomorrow.
He still laughs when my blood is spilt. He still taunts me.
This is what you deserve.
I cried harder.
This is what you get for killing our parents.
I didn't kill them.
I didn't kill them.
I didn't kill them.
I didn't kill them.
I didn't kill them.
I didn't kill them.
I didn't kill them.
It's your fault they're dead.
I couldn't breathe. It is my fault. Me and my stupid books got my parents killed.
I deserved these scars.
I heard footsteps coming near me. Somebody sat down next to me. The next thing I know, the person was pulling me into his strong arms. I sobbed into his shoulder.
"Shh. It's going to be okay, Tess. Shh," Will whispered into my ear. He stroked my hair and then kissed my forehead. Despite my tears, I blushed.
"I didn't kill them," I cried.
"I know you didn't, Tess. I know," Will whispered. "I know."
He held me and wiped away the tears until I stopped crying.
I looked into his gorgeous blue eyes. "Thank you, Will," I whispered.
That's when he saw my scars.
"May I ask what happened?" He questioned.
The truth came spilling out.
"My brother cuts me and beats me when he's drunk and high. He does this because he thinks our parents death is my fault. They died in a car crash taking Nate and I to an author signing that I wanted to go to. He says it's my fault. Camille took off my jacket in the locker room and everyone could see my scars. I ran off and came here and I take it you know the rest."
Will looked at me. "You are not going back to your brother."
"I have to. Where else would I go?" I asked.
Will looked at me like the answer was obvious.
"My house."
I had never been invited somewhere since my parents died.
"My parents will help you figure something out," Will continued. "Just do this for me. Please. I can't let him hurt you anymore."
"Okay," I agreed. He beamed.
"Also, tonight I'm supposed to be going on a double date with my cousin, Jace, and his girlfriend, Clary. I still don't have a date yet. Would you like to go with me?" He asked. I blushed. "Sure," I replied.
I was going on a date with Will Herondale.
